アメリカのシンガーソングライターである Suzanne Vega（スザンヌ・ベガ） 。
1987年にリリースされた彼女のセカンドアルバム『Solitude Standing』に
収録されているこの曲「Tom's Diner」。

ドラマの脚本のような歌詞をアカペラで淡々と歌う Suzanne Vega のアイデアは、
今の時代に聴いても非常に新鮮です。

日本では下記の「ＡＧＦマリーム」のCMで使われました。
記憶に残ってる方も多いかと思います。↓↓↓

1990年には、イギリスのダンスプロダクションチーム・DNA によって
クラブサウンドにリミックスされました。
このリミックスヴァージョンもとても洗練されています。

ところで、「Tom's Diner」のモデルとなったお店が
New York に今もちゃんと存在しているのをご存知ですか？↓↓↓

「TOM'S RESTAURANT」 という名で1940年から営業しているこちらのお店は、
Suzanne Vega の「Tom's Diner」として知られているだけでなく、
アメリカのコメディードラマ 『Seinfeld』 の中でも
「Monk's Diner」という名で使われています。

またお店の近くにはコロンビア大学があり、
オマバ大統領がコロンビア大学の学生だった頃、
よくこの「Tom's Restaurant」に食べに来ていたそうです。
