Hi, my name is Poh Shin, and I come from Singapore.
I came to Japan not knowing even a smack of Japanese. That was probably arrogance, and I'm paying for my naiveté now :p But I'm also a true believer in the maxim that "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". I believe that I will come out of this experience a better person, with more steel in me to face the ups and downs of life. I'm not someone who submits to fate easily.
Prior to coming to Japan, I was serving National Service as an officer in the Singapore Armed Forces. I was a Platoon Commander in an Armored Engineer Company. And yes, I came out alive :)
“Age Quod Agis” – Do well in whatever you do.
This motto that I picked up in primary school has influenced me in how I approach things in life. I must admit that it was never easy trying to outdo myself all the time. However, with each task that I set out to do, at the end of the day, it was with the comforting knowledge that I have given my best, nothing but the very best. This quote has come to be the mental compass that tells me the true North of my direction in life.
When I first prepared myself for an overseas education, the last thing that would have come to my mind was to pursue an engineering degree in Japan. When I was informed that I was offered the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) scholarship to Japan, it took quite some time to fully appreciate the implications of such an offer.
Convinced that the uncertainties of living in a non-English speaking country would be a temporary condition and attracted by the opportunity to experience life through another language and culture, I thought this would be yet another thing I would give my best to. Reading engineering in a country, which is technologically unparalleled definitely has its advantages.
I choose to join the EDB because I want to have my pie, and eat it. I find myself having the best of both worlds where I am plugged into a competitive and dynamic private sector environment, and at the same time, contributing to a noble cause of ensuring the continual development of Singapore's economy.
I believe that it is only through living life to its fullest and taking in all that it can offer will I be the best that I was meant to be. I look forward to the excitement of the challenge confident that all will be well and what experiences I bring home with me will stand me in good stead and prepared to contribute to my own society as an EDB officer. I relish the anticipation of what lies ahead.
Joining HCAP is one of the best things that happened to me in the University of Tokyo. From a very personal perspective, I must admit that some of my best Japanese friends were found in HCAP. It is truly refreshing to find an organization that is international in its outlook. Every member in HCAP Tokyo is constantly trying to widen their horizon and explore the unknown. They are all seeking to experience and take in all that this world of ours has to offer. I am humbled by such an adventurous spirit and I am extremely proud to be part of this close-knitted community. It is all the more appealing when students like us have the opportunity to undertake the challenge of organizing of an exchange conference, all by ourselves. We look forward to hosting Harvard University students here in Tokyo, Japan.
On a more personal note, I enjoy soccer, reading and understanding how the world works - politics, economics, philosophy. I am a proud Arsenal fan; I live and breathe Arsenal football and I will die an Arsenal fan. I also enjoy finance and I believe in paving the path to financial freedom while we are still young. There are large parts of the world where I have yet to cover, and so, traveling is a high priority on my agenda these days.
