結婚式だよ、全員集合！そしてまた事件-実家無し海外在住者の日本滞在記 8日目

いよい姪の結婚式当日である。

式は午後2時からだが

親族の挨拶があるとのことで

早めに行くことになっていた。

高島屋開店と同時に2人でPapasに行き

夫の服をピックアップした。

その後ホテルに一旦戻り着替える予定だ。

私はその時靴やバッグは

普段使いの物にしていたが

ドレスは既に身につけていた。

ロング丈のノースリーブで

シンプルなパーティードレスだ。

ファスナーがないから

着替える前にメイクすると

ドレスを汚す恐れがある。

故に先に着替えておいた。

用事を済ませホテルに戻ろうという時

奇跡的に良い感じの羽織り物が見つかった。

前開きで光沢があり丈短め

ちょっと袖が長すぎるのが気になるが

カジュアルにもフォーマルにも

使えそうである。

少なくとも沖縄で買ったカーディガンよりは

華やかな雰囲気。

お店の人に頼んで

ドレスの上から羽織らせてもらう。

ドレスとの相性は 75点くらいだろうか…

まぁ、良しとしよう。

ホテルで着替えて

結婚式場の最寄り駅に移動

そこからシャトルバスで直ぐだという。

シャトルバス乗り場のところで

偶然姉と合流できた。

ちなみにこの日は

一緒に宮古島へ行った弟の娘の結婚式である。

この娘はコロナのロックダウン直前に

私達夫婦のオークランドの家に

泊まりに来てくれていた。

姪の帰国直後それこそ翌日くらいから

オークランドはロックダウンになったはずだ。

あれから数年コロナ禍で父が他界

私はオンラインで葬儀に出席した。

ほんの数年の間に色々なことがあったなと思う。

式場は随所インスタ映えを考慮したかの設計

素敵で愛らしい内装＆外装で

そこだけヨーロッパの街角を

切り取ったかの様な造りだった。

式には親戚一同集まっており

懐かしい顔がいっぱいだ。

チャペルでは式の前に

来客一人一人に新郎新婦から

封筒に入ったメッセージが届けられた。

なんという演出。

こんな序盤で泣かされて堪るかと思いつつ

もうウルウルである。

だがそんな中

新婦の兄 Tちゃんにだけは

封筒の中身が妹からの

『今日やって欲しいことリスト』

で埋まっていたという。

そう言えばそのTちゃんから

『お父さんから飛行機代だって』

と言って封筒を渡されていた。

『良いよ』と一度は断ったが

返されてもTちゃんが困るので

その場は受け取ることにした。

夫のベストは取り寄せたLサイズでもボタンがとめられず

式は最初から最後まで

うるうるポイント満載であった。

実家も無くなった今こんな風に

一度に親類縁者に会えるのは

本当に冠婚葬祭くらいだろう。

結婚式で流れたビデオの中に

今は亡き両親や赤ちゃんだった姪

若かりし夫や私までもが

写っている画像が映し出されまた涙である。

本当に良い式だったと思う。

だがしかし

その後ホテルに戻って

我々は驚愕することになるのである。

なんと飛行機代と称して

封書に入っていたのは

私がネットで調べた

親族夫婦参加ご祝儀相場の２倍の金額であった。

こちらは相場のご祝儀しか

包んでいなかったのでこれには焦った。

弟に『いくらなんでも貰いすぎだから返すよ』

とラインをいれるのだが…。

It was finally my niece's wedding day.

The ceremony was to start at 2 pm, but we had to go early because the groom and bride family members were going to introduce each other.

As soon as Takashimaya opened, we went to Papas together and picked up my husband's clothes.

After that, we planned to go back to the hotel and change.

At that time, I was wearing my everyday shoes and bag, but I was already wearing my dress.

It was a simple party dress with no sleeves.

It didn't have a zipper, so if I put on makeup before changing, I would run the risk of getting the dress dirty.

So I changed first.

When we were about to return to the hotel, I miraculously found a nice garment.

It was shiny and short, with an open front.

I was a bit concerned about the sleeves being a bit too long, but it looked like it could be used for both casual and formal occasions.

At least it had a more glamorous feel than the cardigan I bought in Okinawa.

I asked the shop staff if I could put it on over my dress.

I guess it matched the dress about 75 points... Well, I'll call it good.

We changed at the hotel and headed to the nearest station to the wedding venue, where we were told we could take a shuttle bus straight away.

By chance, we met up with my sister at the shuttle bus stop.

By the way, that day was the wedding of my younger brother's daughter, with whom we went to Miyakojima together.

This girl had come to stay at our house in Auckland just before the COVID-19 lockdown.

The lockdown must have started the day after she returned to Japan.

A lot has happened all over the world in the few years since then.

The wedding venue had a lovely and adorable interior and exterior that seemed to have been designed with Instagram in mind, and it looked like a street corner in Europe.

All of our relatives had gathered for the ceremony, and there were a lot of familiar faces.

Before the ceremony in the chapel, the bride and groom delivered a message in an envelope to each guest.

What a production. I was already tearing up, thinking that I couldn't bear to cry so early on.

However, the bride's brother, T-chan, had an envelope filled with a to-do list from his sister.

Speaking of which, T-chan had handed me an envelope saying, "For your airfare, from our father.”

I initially said, "No thanks," but I decided to accept it because I thought it would be a hassle for T-chan if he returned it.

The ceremony was full of emotional moments from start to finish.

Now that I no longer have my family home, I think the only time I can see all my relatives at once like this is at a wedding or funeral.

In the video that was played at the wedding, I saw a flash of images of my now deceased parents, my baby niece, my young husband, and myself, and I started crying again.

I think it was a really great ceremony.

However, when we returned to the hotel afterwards, we were shocked.

The envelope that was supposed to be for airfare contained twice the amount of the standard money I had found online for a gift for a married couple to attend as a family.

I was worried because I had only wrapped the standard amount in the gift envelope. I sent a LINE message to my brother saying, "No matter how you look at it, we’ve received too much, so we are going to give it back," but...
