疑わしきは…

今オークランドでは外来生物

脚の黄色いスズメバチ

Yellow-legged hornet が急増中で

大変なことになっている。

ちなみに日本語名は

キアカスズメバチというらしい。

このスズメバチ

それでなくても数が減っているミツバチを

捕食してしまうということで

警戒レベルはMAXだ。

見つけたら第一次産業省へ

通報するように言われており

街にはお尋ね者よろしく

写真入りの看板が出ていたりする。

そんなある日私は家の中でそれを

発見してしまったのだ。

いきなり頭に何かがあたり

振り払ったら怪しい虫が床に落ちた。

幸運なことにサンダルを履いていたので

足で踏み付けて瀕死の状態にして

写真に収めた。

そしてWebサイトに出ていた

第一次産業省へ電話で通報。

その後第一産業省の鑑定チームから

送られて来たメールに

返信する形で画像を送付した。

まずはそれが本物かどうか

画像で鑑定するというのだ。

チームは非常に多忙を極めており

もし本物だったとしても

直ぐに返信できないかもしれないし

駆除にも直ぐには行けないかもとは

電話で話した際に警告されていた。

だが意外にも返信は早かった。

鑑定チームが確認したところ

私が撮影した生物は

キアカスズメバチではないと

判断されたのだ。

でも違うなら違うで

それは〇〇ですと教えて欲しかった。

似てると思ったんだけどなぁ…

確かにスズメバチにしては小さいし

私ごとにきにやられるなんて

ありえないということか。

Currently, Auckland is experiencing a rapid increase in the number of invasive yellow-legged hornets, causing quite a stir. By the way, their Japanese name is apparently Kiaka-Suzume-bachi.

This hornet is on maximum alert because it preys on honeybees, whose numbers are already declining. If you spot one, you're advised to report it to the Ministry for Primary Industries, and there are even wanted signs with photos of it around town.

Then one day, I found one in my house. Suddenly, something hit me on the head, and when I shook it off, the suspicious insect fell to the floor. Luckily, I was wearing sandals, so I stepped on it with my foot, nearly killing it, and took a photo.

I then called the Ministry for Primary Industries, which I found on their website, to report it. I sent a photo in response to an email I received from the Ministry's identification team. They said they would first use the image to determine if it was real.

The team was extremely busy, and I was warned over the phone that even if it was real, they might not be able to respond immediately or even exterminate it right away.

But surprisingly, they responded quickly.

The identification team confirmed that the creature I had photographed was not a yellow-legged hornet.

But if it's not, I wish they'd told me what it was.

I thought it looked similar... Well, if not, we are lucky, aren’t we?
