Thank you NT News!
Natto workshop to turn tide on reputation as smelly dish
But a local woman, Sachi Hirayama is trying to turn the tide on the food by making it more friendly for Australian tastebuds.
“I’m cooking for Australian people so I don’t fully ferment it, so it’s not that bad,” she said.
While Japanese people grow up eating the dish it is still divisive with Ms Hirayama explaining just 30 per cent of Japanese people enjoy the dish.
“Forty per cent of Japanese people eat it even if they don’t like it because it’s so healthy,” she said.
“The rest of them hate it.”
Ms Hirayama admits she sits in the 40 per cent when it came to downing the dish when fully fermented.
“In Japan people eat with soy sauce and rice but I never recommend people to eat it like that,” she said. “In my workshop I provide it with toast and cheese, it’s easier for people to eat if they have never experienced natto.
“Once you hate it you never touch it.
