こんにちは。広報のいいじまです。6月と7月、グッドネーバーズ・ジャパンは、アメリカはインディアナ州にあるアーラム大学から、二人のアメリカ人インターンを受け入れています。
もうすぐインターン期間も終了… ということで、ふたりにブログを書いてもらいました！

初めまして!
私はパラディソ・レオナルドと申します。シカゴから来ました。リッチモンドでアーラム大学に通っています。今、グッドネーバーズ・ジャパン（GNJP）のインターンをしています。二か月間働いています。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
私は、大学でこのインターンシップを知りました。スカイプインタビューで初めてグッドネーバーズ・ジャパンのスタッフの飯島さんに会いました。私はとても緊張していて、思っていることをうまく言えませんでした。でも、アシュリーと一緒にインターンに選ばれたので、インタビューは大丈夫だったようです。二か月後、日本に来ました！

GNJPでは、毎日同じ仕事をするのではなく、その日の大切なことをします。
翻訳したりパンフレットを作ったり。私の一番好きな仕事はビデオを編集することです。ビデオの編集は趣味なので、GNJPでビデオを編集できる仕事をもらえると、とても楽しいです。
私とアシュリーの主要な仕事はGNJPと英語を使う企業・団体とのパートナーシップを作ることでした。これには長いプロセスが必要なので、毎週、少しずつ進めました。最初に会社のリストと提案書をつくってメールを送りました。一番難しかったことは電話をかけることでした。50の学校にフォローアップの電話をしました。特に最初の何件かは、とても緊張しました。

先月と今月は楽しかったです。みんなはとてもやさしくて、たくさんのことを習いました。GNJPに来た時、私は間違いを犯すことを恐れていました。でも、間違いを犯すことは経験になります。間違いから学ぶことができます。GNJPからたくさん学びました。
GNJPに来る前は、大学で何にフォーカスして学んでいくべきか見えていませんでした。なぜなら社会に出た後、何が役に立つのかを知らなかったから。でも、今は将来に向けて何を準備したらいいかが明確になりました。

大学の授業で学ぶ事実の数ではなくて、問題に直面した時にその問題についてより客観的に考えられるよう、自分の今までの経験をいかに活かせるかが大事なのです。
私たちはいつも、問題の答えや対処法を知っているわけではありません。でも、問題を乗り越える力こそが働いていくうえで大事な能力だと思います。
GNJPで働いた経験は私の自信になり将来が楽しみになりました。そして、私に多くの素晴らしい人々に会う機会を与えてくれました。

Hello!
My name is Leo Paradiso and I’m from Chicago, Illinois and I attend Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. I am currently working as an intern at Good Neighbors Japan in Tokyo, the internship is 2 months long and regrettably my time here is a little more than half over.
I found out about this internship through my school, Earlham College. My first interaction with the Good Neighbors Japan office, was my Skype interview with Ms. Iijima. Throughout the interview I was so nervous I couldn’t keep my thoughts straight, but apparently the interview went well enough as I was selected for the internship along with one of my peers Ashley. I was overjoyed at the news and 1.5 months later I found myself on a plane to Tokyo, Japan.
My typical workday does not consist of working on the same thing every day, it instead involves working on whatever needs to be done that day. One day I could be working on translating a letter in Japanese and transferring its contents from paper to a Word document, and the next I could be making a brochure for one of Good Neighbors Japan’s projects, but by far my favorite is when I am tasked with editing a video about one of the projects that GNJP is working on or has just finished. Video editing is my hobby and when I get the chance to do that in the office, it becomes just that much more interesting of a job.
The main project that Ashley and I were tasked was to find some organizations or groups that we could create a partnership between them and GNJP. This is a long term process so we work on it bit by bit each week, we started by making a list of organization and then we created a proposal document to send out to them.
Throughout the process so far, the most difficult part came after all of the emails had been sent out and I had to call 50 different schools in order to follow up. The first few calls were definitely the most difficult, as I had to figure out how to respond to a myriad of different situations.
As I look over the past month of work and ahead to the next month, I am happy with my experiences and the people that I have met and I look forward to everything I am yet to experience and accomplish. My biggest fear coming into this internship was that I would make a horrible mistake, and I have made a few small ones, but those can be some of the best learning experiences. Working here has really helped my understanding of life after college and helped shape how I will finish up my college experience.
Before coming to Good Neighbors Japan I didn’t have a direction or real focus to my school work because I didn’t know or understand what would actually be useful to me once I graduated, but now I have a clearer picture of how to best prepare for my future. It is not about how many facts you can learn in your classes, it is how those classes can help your experience so that you can think more critically about problems that come up. You will not always know how to do something or the answer to a problem, but the ability to recover from those problems is what makes you a strong worker. Working at Good Neighbors Japan has made me more confident and optimistic about my future and has given me the opportunity to meet many amazing people.
