ついに2018年になりましたね。和暦だと平成30年です…！！
本日ご紹介するトピックは、「おせち料理」です！
皆さんの好きなおせちの具材はなんですか？
私は数の子です！
おせち料理には、それぞれの品に意味が込められていますね。
本日は、その意味の数々を英語で簡単に説明する例文をご紹介していきます！
Datemaki : Scholarship
In the past, Japanese people traditionally rolled important documents or paintings.
（昔、伝統的に日本の人々は、大切な書類などを巻物にして保管していました。（卒業証書もそうですよね！））
Due to its resemblance to the scrolled papers, the dish is said to represent a wish for the development of culture and learning.
（つまり、伊達巻が巻物ににているため、学業成就の願いが込められています。）
Kuri-kinton: Wealth
Kuri kinton (sweet chestnuts) literally means: “golden dango (sweet dumpling) made of chestnuts.”
（栗きんとんを直訳すると「金の団子」となります。）
As the color is yellowish-gold, it goes without saying that it represents a wish for wealth and a fruitful new year.
（名前に金という文字が入っていることから分かるように、栗きんとんは、その一年の金運や勝負運を願っていることを表しています。）
Kohaku Kamaboko: Sunrise
Kamaboko (boiled fish paste) is most commonly presented as a combination of the colors red and white.
（かまぼこ（すり身魚）は赤と白の組み合わせの食材として最も一般的に挙げられます。）
The red color is believed to prevent evil spirits, while the white represents purity. Further, the shape of kamaboko represents the first sun rise of the new year.
（赤は魔除け、白は清浄を意味し、かまぼこの形が太陽に似ていることから、初日の出を表しています。）
Kobu-maki: Happiness
The word “kobu” is a Japanese homonym for “yorokobu,” which means joy and happiness.
（「こぶ」というのは、日本語ので喜びや幸福を意味する「よろこぶ」の同名語です。）
Kobu also symbolizes many offspring when written as “子生,” a kanji that represents childbirth.
（「こぶ」はまた、漢字で出産を意味する「子生」と書かれ、子孫繁栄を意味します。）
Kazunoko: Fertility
“Kazu” means numbers and “ko” means children. So, kazunoko symbolizes being blessed with many children.
（「かず」は数を意味し、「子」は子供を意味します。つまり、かずのこはたくさんの子宝に恵まれることを表しています。）
Ebi: Longevity
The ebi (shrimp) on your plate is there to wish you a long life, until you have a bent back and long beard ．
（エビは背中がまがり、髭が長く伸びるまで長生きするという意味があります。）
The red color also said that it’s there to scare evil spirits away. Just like kamaboko.
（エビの赤色は魔除けになるとも言われています。かまぼこと同じですね。）
Kuromame: Health
As the word “mame” originally means good health and strength in Japanese, kuromame (black beans) represents a wish to live and work in sound health during the this year.
（「まめ」という言葉はもともと、「強さ」や「健康」を意味しているため、黒豆は今年も健康に働くことができるようにという意味が込められています。）
Renkon: Foreseeable, good future
In Buddhism, renkon (lotus root) is considered a plant of purity, as it’s believed to grow in the heavenly pond where the Buddha lived.
（仏教では、レンコン（蓮根）は、仏が住む天の池で成長すると信じられているように、純粋な植物であると考えられています。）
Look through the holes in the renkon — you can clearly see the other side without any interference.
（レンコンの穴を覗き込んでみてください。そこから何の障害もなく、反対側がよく見えますよね。）
Therefore, lotus root represents a happy future without obstacles.
（つまり、レンコンは見通しの良い未来があることを表しています。）
Gobo: Strength & Stability
Just like those roots that grow so firmly in the soil, burdock symbolizes hope for a life of strength and stability and a life of physical strength.
（ゴボウは、土壌にしっかりと成長する根のように、強さと安定性の生活と体力の人生への希望を象徴しています。）
In other words: eat this at New Year’s and nothing can bring your down.
（言い換えると、新年にゴボウを食べれば、何にも屈することはありません。）
Tai: Auspiciousness & Celebration
Tai is a fish for celebration in Japan.
（タイは日本において、お祝いのときに食べる魚とされています。）
A play on words, it derives from medetai, meaning “to celebrate.”
（「めでたい」から派生して「祝う」という意味を持っています。）
