The Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) was written in 712, and Japan's oldest anthology of poetry, Manyoshu (Essays on Many Leaves) by Makoto Ueno (manyou.jp), was written in 759. This is because it is difficult to find primary sources for earlier periods.
