その2012年モデルでは、WSB参戦から得たノウハウを反映させて、さらに運動性能を向上。従来型との外観上の違いは、テール部分やサイドパネル程度と少ない。しかし、サスペンションのジオメトリー変更、10段階で調整可能なメカニカルステアリングダンパーの採用、ステアリングヘッドの改良によるエアインテーク量のアップなど、大幅な進化を遂げている。
999ccの4ストロークエンジンは、スペック自体は最大出力193psと従来通り。しかしBMWによると、再チューニングによって、中速域のトルクが増し、スロットルレスポンスも向上しているという。レースABSやDTC（ダイナミック・トラクション・コントロール）の熟成も図られた。
