先日、名古屋に友人と行った折、新幹線で名古屋到着直前に流れた英語を聞いていた友人が、ふとつぶやきました。
「『まもなく到着します』の”まもなく”は、brief って言うんだ。」
ん？？？
そういえば、電光掲示板では、「まもなく名古屋です。」と案内が出ていて、英語のアナウンスは、"We will soon make a brief stop at Nagoya."と言っていました。
なるほど、結果的に、「名古屋に着く」ことは変わりないのですが、アナウンスの英語のbriefの意味は、短時間、という意味で、アナウンスの文全体は、「まもなく、名古屋に短時間 停車します。」という意味です。（まもなくは、soon ですね）
旅行者にとってはその人の目的地がそこであれば「到着」ですが、新幹線はまだ先があるので、停車、という表現を使うのでしょうね。ちなみに、終点の直前では、"We will arrive at Hakata terminal in a few minutes." というように、arrive at と言っています。
帰路もアナウンスを気をつけて聞いていると、熟語や文法などの学習に良い表現がいっぱいでした。
