タイトルもそっけなければモノクロ写真のジャケット写真も地味な発掘ライヴ盤の本作ですが、サン・ラ専門発掘レーベルTransparency社は厳密に収録時のライヴ写真をジャケットにしているので、本作もタイトルとジャケットだけでは単なる発掘ライヴと片づけられない充実したライヴ盤です。1981年度最初に制作されたサン・ラ生前発表の公式アルバムはアーケストラ公式サイトでは『A Fireside with Lucifer』になっていますが、この年の公式アルバムは複数枚が同時進行で制作されていて録音順・完成発売順のいずれに整理しても決定的な通し番号がつけられません。サン・ラ没後発掘リリースのライヴ盤を含めれば、録音順でもっとも早いものはTransparency社から2006年に発売されたCD3枚組の本作『Live at Myron's Ballroom』になり、ロサンゼルスのマイロンズ・ボールルームでの1981年4月2日公演を2種類のオーディエンス(観客)録音から復原した、コンサートのほぼコンプリート盤となっています。本作のセットリストは1977～1978年頃からあまり変わっていませんが、CD3枚で3時間のヴォリューム、曲数の多さ、1980年末のCD28枚組にもおよぶデトロイト・ジャズ・センターの一週間公演(12月26日から1日2セット、千秋楽は31日深夜～1981年1月のカウントダウン)以来のタイトなアンサンブルへの新アレンジで新鮮に聴ける発掘ライヴ盤になっており、オーディエンス録音ゆえの音質の不安定さ、楽器の分離の聴き取りづらさ、レンジの狭さ、乗り乗りの観客の歓声でオーディオ的には必ずしも良好な録音とは言えませんが、発掘ライヴではよくあるように分離と音質の良いミキサー卓からのライン録音、放送用音源よりもオーディエンス録音の方が生々しく迫力ある臨場感をとらえている場合も多々あり、本作もオーディオ的音質よりも臨場感を楽しむことができるライヴ盤です。この頃サン・ラはライヴごとに最新アレンジは基本的に同じでもピアノ、オルガン、シンセサイザーなど各種キーボードを変えて演奏することが多くなっており、本作の「Space Is The Place」は8ビート、使用楽器はピアノと従来のアレンジ、使用楽器から一変した演奏が聴かれ、全体的に8ビート色の強いアレンジからシンセサイザーではなくピアノとオルガンを主要楽器としていっそうリズムを強化した演奏を聴かせており、馴染みの代表曲・ライヴ定番曲でも新鮮に聴こえます。'60年代～'70年代のポリリズム～ファンク的なリズム・アレンジよりもタイトな8ビートへの傾斜が見られるのは好きずきで、オリジナル・アレンジの方か好きということがあってもこうした新アレンジはライヴでしか聴けないものですから、新アレンジで統一感のある本作からアーケストラの音楽に触れても、これまでの代表作をひととおり聴いたリスナーにも納得できる好ライヴを3時間たっぷり楽しめるアルバムです。特にサン・ラのオリジナル曲とクレジットされることが多い爆裂ナンバー「Watusi」の、23分にもおよぶ演奏は圧巻で、同曲の最長ライヴ演奏ではないでしょうか。また本作前後からアーケストラのサックス陣はライヴでエレクトロニック・サックス(electronic wind instrument)を使用するようになっており、その傾向は1983年～1984年のヨーロッパ～エジプト～ギリシャ・ツアーではすっかり定着するようになります。
これまでにもサン・ラのディスコグラフィーはたびたび掲載してきましたが、サン・ラ(1914-1993)のキャリアはおよそ4期に分けるのが把握しやすく、
●第1期－1956年～1961年・シカゴ時代(デビュー・アルバムからニューヨーク進出準備まで)＝約15作
●第2期－1961年～1969年・ニューヨーク潜伏時代(本拠地移転後60年代いっぱいのアルバム)＝約30作
●第3期－1970年～1976年・国際メジャー進出時代(ヨーロッパ進出、メジャー契約成功期)＝約55作
●第4期－1977年～1979年・国際メジャー定着時代(本国人気低迷～編成試行錯誤期)＝約30作
●第5期－1980年～1993年(没年)・メインストリーム浸透～総合晩年期＝約60作
となります。7回前の『サンライズ・イン・ディファレント・ディメンションズ(Sunrise in Different Dimensions)』(Hat Hut, 1980)からすでに第5期に入っており、ややタイミングを逸しましたが、サン・ラのキャリアでも最終局面かつ大円熟期でもある第5期のアルバムを再度リストにまとめ直して1980年度作品の振り返りと、次回以降からの予告といたします。なお近年の発掘・編集盤61～64はそれぞれサターン・レコーズからの全シングル集、ヴォーカル曲集、エキゾチック曲集、歌姫ジューン・タイソンのリード・ヴォーカル曲集と、サン・ラはベスト盤は不向きという定説をくつがえす好企画が次々リリースされており、それぞれ未発表曲・未発表テイク・アルバム未収録曲多数と充実した内容を誇ります。特にジューン・タイソンのリード・ヴォーカル曲集『Saturnian Queen Of The Sun Ra Arkestra』は5年前の2019年11月リリースですが即完売・追加プレスされており、入手できるうちにお薦めしたい絶品です。
