英語の動詞の多くはtranssitive verbであると同時にintraansitive verbでもある。英文を読む場合、その動詞が
transitiveなのかintransitiveなのかが区別できないことがある。頼りになるのは英英辞書だが、意外なことに英英辞書を見てもわからないのだ。文例がvtとviが混在していて、どれがvtなのかviなのかが説明されていないのである。
例えばOxford Learner's Dictionaryでhelpを引くと下記のように表記されている。help somebody (to) do something はobjectのsomethingがあるのでtransitiveだとわかるがhelp (to) do something がtransitiveなのかintransitiveなのかが説明さていないのでどちらかわからない。objectがないからintransitiveだよ、ということなんだろうが不親切だ。

2023年の6月30日まではMacmillan DictionaryのWEB版が公開されていたので、それで99％は判別できた。ところがどういうわけか6月30日で公開が中止になってしまったのだ。書籍版を買ったが2007年版が最新版でWEB版とは大違い、判別できないような編集になっている。
