さて前回は、アリスの冒険話を聞こうじゃないか、とグリフォンが言ったところでした。

The Lobster Quadrille
ええと、ザクザク行きすぎですか？（もしかして不評買ってる…？汗）
めげずにザクザクいきます。
もう今となってはこれは自分との戦いです。
So Alice began telling them her adventures from the time when she first saw the White Rabbit.
アリスは白ウサギを最初に見たときのことからの冒険を話し始めました。
She was a little nervous about it just at first, the two creatures got so close to her, one on each side, and opened their eyes and mouths so very wide, but she gained courage as she went on.
最初はちょっと緊張したんですね。なんでかというと、カメとグリフォンが両側にぴったりとつき、目を見開いて口を大きく開けていたからです。でも勇気を振り絞って続けました。
Her listeners were perfectly quiet till she got to the part about her repeating `You are Old, Father William,' to the Caterpillar, and the words all coming different, and then the Mock Turtle drew a long breath, and said `That's very curious.'
アリスがイモムシに You are Old, Father William を暗唱して聞かせているところまでは静かに聞いていたんですね。なつかしいですね～。これが出てきたのは Chapter 5 でした。はるか昔の事のようです。
で、その詩が全然違う言葉で出てきたのでしたね。
モックタートルは長々と息を吸って、非常に興味深い と。
そしてグリフォンは、
`It's all about as curious as it can be,' said the Gryphon.
It's all すべてだ
about ～について（のすべて）
as curious as it can be それがなり得るかぎり 興味深いもの
分かりづらいけど、まあつまり、これ以上はないくらい curious だ、ということですね。
`It all came different!' the Mock Turtle repeated thoughtfully. `I should like to hear her try and repeat something now. Tell her to begin.'
全部（言葉が）違って出てきた、とモックタートルが考え深そうに言います。
違うものを暗唱するのも聞いてみたい、始めるよう言いなさい、と
He looked at the Gryphon as if he thought it had some kind of authority over Alice.
グリフォンを見て言ったんですね。まるで自分がアリスに対して何かしらの権限を持っているかのように。
`Stand up and repeat "'Tis the Voice of the Sluggard,"' said the Gryphon.
起立して 'Tis the Voice of the Sluggard を暗唱してみろ、とグリフォンが言います。
また何か変なのが出てきましたよ。
'Tis the Voice of the Sluggard って何でしょう。
調べたら、Isaac Watts（1674生） という人の書いた詩のようです。
'tis ＝ it is
sluggard ＝ のらくら者
'Tis the voice of the Sluggard: I heard him complain が原題です。
原文の内容は、大まかに言うと、いつまでものらくらして生きている男をみて、ああ自分はちゃんと勉強して働いていてああならずに済んでよかった、という詩です。
さてそれがどんな風に変わるんでしょうか？
