I Love Kebabs!

The kebab; a staple of post-pub cuisine is considered by many to be a British national dish alongside fish and chips and chicken tikka masala.

When I first came to Japan (many years ago), kebabs weren't so common but recently I can see many shops and food vans selling these amazing things!

Apparently, there are about 20,000 kebab outlets in the UK. (Compare that with the 10,500 fish and chips shops) generating about £ 2.8 billion for the British economy. That was before the COVID19 Pandemic so the numbers may be different now ...

Kebabs first appeared in the UK in the 1940s with the arrival of immigrants from Turkish, Cypriot and Kurdish communities. The famous doner kebab, which is cooked on a rotating vertical spit, appeared later in the 1960s.

Today, 1.3 million kebabs are thought to be sold across Britain.

I wonder how many kebabs are eaten in Japan each day ... ? Well, at least one because that doner kebab in the picture was my lunch today!

Spring is here

All of us have felt it. It’s in the air we breathe, in the warmth of the sun and the nature around us. For better or worse we are transitioning to a warmer weather with new scenarios, routines and health challenges. I’m one of those who’d rather see things grow and blossom than face more winter with confusing temperatures and no snow. Not too keen on the summer either, mind you. Well, each to their own.

Anyway, it’s not exactly cherry blossom season yet but the colours are evident wherever you look. I thought I might take a few pictures so here they are! Any favourites among the early spring blooms? Mine so far is the fragrant Japanese Skimmia (I hope got the name right!) – it’s very noticeable when you walk past it but the sweet smell makes your head turn. Can you guess which one it is among the photos?
