One of my vices besides salt and vinegar crisps and kebabs is custard! I just love the stuff.

But it's pretty rare to find it in Japan. Sure there's the custard filled choux cremes or "purin" but they're cold and therefore wrong. Custard should be served piping hot (or warm at least) with some fruit or over an apple crumble!

So I was pretty chuffed when I discovered this custard and strawberry sauce sponge cake in Mos Cafe recently. As soon as I saw it I just had to try it. And it's awesome. Sure, the sponge cake could be denser and the custard could be a bit thicker for my liking but it was the best I've had in a long time.

Custard is a pretty common staple in desserts in England and was invented, I think, in 1837. Don't confuse it with American custard which seems to be quite different.

Anyway, check it out if you want to try something that kind of resembles a British dessert.

How well can you cook? In our busy lives we tend to opt for quick meals, such as ready-made supermarket food, freshly made, or straight from the freezer to be prepared in a few minutes in a microwave.

On occasion however, some of us feel more creative in pursuit of something different from our usual diet. Today, I fancied just that. I felt like having something filling but light at the same time, something that does not require a lot of research, ingredients and complicated preparation. I’m not a cooking champion by no means and I’m usually happy to settle for eggs and bacon, sandwiches or spaghetti. But today I sat down in my kitchen and came up with … potato pancakes. Great on their own or with jam, yoghurt, tomato sauce, mayonnaise or just sugar. If you want to make something quick on a low budget, give it a try! They’re pretty tasty 😊

突然ですが、最近ジョニー・デップとアンバー・ハードの名誉棄損裁判にはまってます。

(Youtube

Andersen Park gets its name from the world-famous Danish fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen. The park is situated in Funabashi city (in Chiba) which is twinned with H.C. Anderson's birth city of Odense located in southern Denmark.

I first visited this park several years ago and it made an impression on me, so over the past Golden Week break it seemed the right time (and weather) to go back.

The park is very spacious and is made up of mulitple areas. There are places where children can explore massive playgrounds, attempt to cross obstacle courses, and there's even a petting zoo. For Adults there's plenty of open space for tents and picnics, flower gardens, and plenty of water features including a lake where you can enjoy the view by boarding a rowboat. There's even a windmill!

I highly recommend the park for an afternoon out (just don't go during the school holidays if you want to avoid the kids!).

For many of us it passed as quickly as it came. Golden Week is one of the busiest times of the year and one of those holidays that requires at least a minimum amount of planning if you consider going out. Main roads are packed with cars, popular attractions such as theme parks, zoos and parks are swarming with visitors trying to break away from their daily routines and even the sky seems busier with more flights scheduled after the pandemic.

There are however, some quiet spots, oases of peace that offer a much needed rest, even if getting there might still be a challenging experience. Yoyogi Park during Golden Week is less crowded compared with the cherry blossom season and is spacious enough to accommodate the most demanding picnic enthusiasts. Spending half a day in the shade of a tree, surrounded by green vegetation and flowers and with a gentle breeze on my face was a great way to unwind and recover from everyday hustle and bustle.
