a touch of autumn

It has been a couple of cool days since Saturday. One would expect to see a spell of hot weather following the recent typhoon but instead, here we are, feeling a touch of autumn. It isn’t to say we can’t enjoy the blessings of summer even now. There’s still plenty of fun out there to sweeten your Silver Week. A cup of coffee outside your favourite cafe, having a ride on a pedalo in a park near you, great nature to lay your eyes on while having a stroll around the neighbourhood are just a few things to keep in mind during this break from recent heatwaves. If however, the chill bothers you, you can always try a hearty bowl of warming fish soup in a local eatery!

So, what's going to change?

After the death of Queen Elizabeth II many things will start to change throughout the United Kingdom.

The national anthem will of course change. "God save the Queen" will change to "God save the King".

The stamps currently feature the queen's portrait and will soon feature the king as they are brought into circulation. Postboxes in the UK also have the cypher, "EIIR" written on them, which means Elizabeth II Regina (regina meaning king or queen in latin). However they will likely not be replaced, but as new ones are created they will have the king's cypher on them instead.

The money, known as pound sterling, also currently features the queen's portrait but they will eventually be replaced with the king's. The queen's portrait also appears on some currency in other countries like Canada and Australia, but nobody knows yet if those countries will keep them as they are or replace them with the king's portrait.

Many of the Royal family's titles are likely to change too. Prince William, known formerly as the Duke of Cambridge, will now be known as the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge. Many more titles will likely change.

The biggest change of course is that the UK now has a new king. Of course, whether he will be as liked and as fondly remembered as the queen remains to be seen.

（始めのHiphip!に特に意味はないそうで、次の言葉を揃えるための掛け声のようなもの。日本でいう『せーの』みたいな感じらしいです。A講師より）

だからカタカナ表記なのか～と今更納得。

New waiting staff

Over the past few years, we have become accustomed to limited human contact. Online chats, Zoom meetings, remote work, quarantines, limits on opening hours and numbers of people allowed in public places are only some examples of how our lives have changed under new rules. One other example that caught my eye recently was my visit to a yakiniku restaurant in the neighborhood when over half of our orders were delivered by a robot instead of one of the waiting staff. I have seen automated sushi bars on many occasions, but this was a new experience of witnessing a robot meandering among people at work that wasn’t a part of an exhibition or a Japanese robotics show.
