We're lucky to celebrate Christmas day at the weekend this year. Although not many Japanese realise that the 26th of December, known as 'Boxing Day', is also an important holiday among countries such as the UK, Australia, and Canada.
The origin of the name isn't exactly clear but some people believe it refers to the 17th century custom of collecting money or gifts in a 'christmas box' to give to the poor or the servants of wealthy families.
Nothing like that actually happens nowadays mind you. Just families spending time together eating and drinking sat in front of the TV. Some people even go outside to brave the crowds in search of bargains at the boxing day sales. Personally, I like to be curled up on the couch with a warm drink and a book.
Whatever you do this Christmas I wish you a very merry one!
