Leksand Memorial Park
2889-235 Sweden Hills, Tobetsu-cho, Hokkaido 061-3777, Japan
Leksand Memorial Park features a monument of the "Dala horse," a traditional Swedish wooden carved horse. Its saddle and reins are adorned with "Kurbits"—colorful, painted floral patterns—creating a beautiful sight that harmonizes with the lush green landscape of Sweden Hills. The term "Kurbits" derives from the Latin *Cucurbita* and refers to plants in the gourd family, such as bottle gourds and pumpkins. It is said to be inspired by the legend of "Jonah's gourd" (or pumpkin)—a plant that, according to the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament, grew large overnight to provide shade from the sun.[1]

Sweden Hills in Tobetsu Town is not merely a stylish, Nordic-style residential development; it is a community born from the convergence of a corporate vision, local revitalization efforts, and diplomatic and cultural exchange between Japan and Sweden. Rows of wooden houses built by Sweden House—characterized by their distinctive *benigara* (reddish-brown) hue—line the expansive lots, while the underground placement of power lines and utility poles preserves the beauty of the skyline and the streetscape.[2]
Hokuou no Kaze Michi-no-Eki Tobetsu
774-11 Tobetsuto, Tobetsu-cho, Hokkaido 061-3773, Japan
At the "Hokuou no Kaze Michi-no-Eki Tobetsu," a wide array of Moomin-themed merchandise was on sale right by the entrance, displayed alongside carved Dala horses and other Nordic goods. As you likely know, Moomin originated in Finland, though it is sometimes mistaken for being Swedish. This is because the creator, Tove Jansson, was a Swedish-speaking Finn—part of a demographic comprising a small percentage of the population—and the original Moomin stories were written in Swedish. In short, while the work is Finnish in terms of nationality, it is deeply rooted in Swedish language and culture; one might even say it is a work that bridges both nations.[3]
IKEA Pop-up Store in Tobetsu
359-1 Ota, Tobetsu-cho, Hokkaido 061-3773, Japan
(Hokuo no Kaze Roadside Station Tobetsu)
An IKEA pop-up store opened at this roadside station this past May. As there are currently no permanent IKEA stores in Hokkaido, this pop-up marks the company's first retail presence in the prefecture. IKEA is the world's largest furniture and home goods retailer, originating in Sweden. Its corporate culture is rooted in the spirit of the Småland region—where the company was founded—emphasizing frugality, thrift, and ingenuity. It offers home furnishings based on a design concept that combines beauty, practicality, durability, and affordability with a commitment to sustainability. Why was Tobetsu chosen as the location for this first pop-up store in Hokkaido? By now, the answer should be clear: for IKEA, a company with Swedish roots, Tobetsu—a town with deep ties to Swedish culture—was seen as a location with a strong natural affinity.
