いろいろあって後まわしになっていたが、花壇の冬支度をすることにした。枯れた一年草とまわりの雑草を引きぬいて土をはらい、ラベンダーの株を束ねて支柱に固定した。毎度のことながら花壇の仕事は、腰にくる。日暮れころようやく作業を終えると妻も私もヘトヘトに疲れ果て、ソファーに足を投げだしてしばらく動くことすらできずにいた。もともと私たちは植物のことについて何も知らない園芸ビギナーだった。（今でも何も知らないけど。）ラベンダーが草花ではなく木だということすら知らず、夏のはじめに水やりもせずに放っておいたら、木質化して枯れたように色あせてしまった。その後、気温があがるにつれ、どういうわけか青い花がたくさん芽吹いてきて復活したんだが、何をどうして復活したのかいまだによくわからない。さて、いよいよ本格的な北国の冬が間近にせまってきた。外出には手袋とマフラーがほしい季節だ。私はといえば、今夜もあいかわらず図書館で借りてきたミルト・ジャクソンの名盤を聴きながら、熱い紅茶で割ったウィスキーをちびちびやっている。心の冬支度だ。
