Tokyo International Airport

Haneda Airport boasts 177 restaurants and souvenir shops. However, for an international airport with the largest number of flights in Japan, that number doesn't seem particularly large. Or perhaps it's just that my local New Chitose Airport has an unusually high number.
I took a limousine bus from Haneda Airport and got off at Kaihin-Makuhari Station. This area is one of Japan's leading event cities, centered around Makuhari Messe. High-rise buildings such as the World Business Garden line the streets, and the area has developed as a bayside area with a good balance of commercial facilities, offices, parks, and residential areas.
Chiba Marine Stadium

Upon arriving at the stadium, the Chunichi Dragons' cheering section in the left field stands was already packed with fans in blue uniforms, enthusiastically cheering along to the announcements of the starting lineup. The cheering section for this team in the Kanto area seems even more passionate than that of their home region, the Chubu area.
毎年恒例、球場めぐりの旅へ行ってきた。今年は千葉ロッテマリーンズとのセ・パ交流戦を観にZOZOマリンスタジアムへ。羽田空港からリムジンバスに揺られ海浜幕張駅で下車。ここは幕張メッセを中心とした日本有数のイベント都市だ。ワールドビジネスガーデンなどの高層ビル群が立ち並び、商業施設、オフィス、公園、住宅街がバランスよく集まる湾岸エリアとして発展している。球場に着くとすでにレフト側、中日ドラゴンズの応援団席は青いユニフォーム姿でぎっしりと埋めつくされ、スターティングメンバーの場内アナウンスに合わせ迫力の大声援を送っていた。この球団の関東エリアの応援団は、地元中京エリアのそれよりも気合が入っているように感じる。もっとも相手方、千葉ロッテマリーンズの応援団は、プロ野球ファンの間では有名な統制の取れた応援で、実際に生で耳にすると、まるで優秀な男声合唱団のように一糸乱れぬ掛け声に圧倒された。野球に限った話ではないんだが、スポーツの特定の個人やチームを応援する人々の情熱を見ていると、数時間のあいだ日常のストレスを離れチームの勝利に希望を託する人々のどこか儚い思いが感じられて、なんだか目頭が熱くなってくる。こんなことで感動しているんだから、自分も歳をとったなあ、としみじみ思う。
In this three-game series, although they lost the first and third games (losing the series overall...), the Chunichi Dragons won the second game by a large margin of 11-4. In the top of the first inning, as soon as the game started, lead-off batter Okabayashi patiently waited 8 pitches before drawing a walk. The next batter, Ukai, hit a timely double to score the first run. Hosokawa then hit a two-run timely single to add to the score. And then Ishikawa Takaya hit a two-run home run, scoring five runs in that inning. This alone was enough to bring tears to the eyes of Chunichi fans, but then in the top of the third inning, Ukai hit a grand slam, making it an incredibly exciting game that left everyone wondering if such a thing could really happen.
この三連戦は初戦と三戦目は落としたものの（カード負け越し...）二戦目は11対4と中日ドラゴンズが大勝した。1回表、試合が始まるや先頭打者の岡林選手が8球ねばって四球で出塁。続く鵜飼選手のタイムリー二塁打で1点先制し、細川選手の2点タイムリーでさらに加点。そして石川昴弥選手のツーランホームランでこの回一挙5得点。これだけでも中日ファンの目に涙を浮かばせるには十分だったが、さらに3回表にはまたも鵜飼選手の満塁ホームランが飛び出し、こんなこともあるものか、と驚くほどの嬉しい試合となった。
Tukuba Space center

During the daytime before the match started, since I had come all the way to the Kanto region, I decided to visit the Tsukuba Space Center in Ibaraki Prefecture. Space is one of my favorite topics, but explaining it in detail here would take too long, so I will omit it. I have read almost all of the books written by past astronauts, and I have also read several volumes of the manga "Space Brothers." Let me share one episode that particularly impressed me. When Koichi Wakata, a Japanese hero among astronauts, first became an astronaut, he couldn't understand the rapid-fire English of the air traffic controller giving instructions over the radio during fighter pilot training. Disheartened, on his way home in his car, the children's song "Poppo poppo, pigeon poppo, do you want some beans? Here you go" came out of his mouth, and tears welled up in his eyes. Astronauts are the elite of the elite, superhuman beings who can do anything, but even they all experience setbacks.
This massive, imposing, duct-filled metal structure is an actual rocket engine that was used. Looking at the winding, matte-textured ducts, for some reason, I'm reminded of the eerie design of the alien from the movie "Alien," starring Sigourney Weaver. It's metallic yet organic, and looks like a ferocious creature.
昼間、試合開始までの時間に、せっかく関東まで来たんだからと茨城県の「つくば宇宙センター」に見学に行ってきた。実は宇宙の話は私の大好物なんだが、長くなるので割愛する。日本の歴代宇宙飛行士たちの著作もひととおり読んだし、漫画の「宇宙兄弟」も途中までだが読んだ。それらの著作の中で印象に残っているエピソードをひとつだけ紹介しよう。日本の宇宙飛行士で最大のスーパーヒーロー、若田光一氏がまだ宇宙飛行士になりたてのころ、戦闘機を操縦する訓練中、無線で指示を伝える管制官の早口の英語がどうしても聴き取れなかった。訓練を終え、ひどい疲労と深い挫折感に苛まれながら帰宅する車のなか、ふと「ポッポッポー 鳩ポッポー 豆がほしいか そらやるぞ」という歌が口をついて出た。歌いながら彼はひとり悔し涙を流したという。童謡「鳩」の牧歌的で明るい歌詞と当時の若田氏の情けない心情がリンクして経験談に強烈なリアリティを感じさせる。宇宙飛行士はエリート中のエリートであり何でもこなすスーパーマンだと思っていたが、だからといって挫折経験のない人なんて、当然いないのだ。
This tour allowed me to see the "closed environment adaptation training facility" that appeared in the manga "Space Brothers," and the control room where JAXA flight controllers are currently managing the operation of the "Kibo" experiment module of the International Space Station, which was quite impressive. After the tour, I ate "Space Katsu Curry" at the cafeteria. It was, to put it mildly, just a typical ready-made curry that tasted like something you'd find in a company cafeteria. It cost 1000 yen for one meal.
この見学ツアーでは、漫画「宇宙兄弟」に出てきた「閉鎖環境適応訓練施設」や、今まさにJAXAのフライトコントローラーが国際宇宙ステーションの「きぼう」実験棟の運用管理をしている管制室を目の前で見ることができて、たいへん感銘を受けた。見学終了後、センター内の食堂で、その名も「宇宙カツカレー」を食べた。何ていうんだろう。まさに「The 社員食堂の味」とでもいうか、普通のレトルトカレーだった。おいしかったけど。一食1000円なり。そういえば昨年、仙台に東北楽天イーグルス戦を観に行ったときは、当然のごとく牛タン定食を食べたんだったが、今回の千葉・茨城旅行では名物と呼ばれるものは特に食べず、かわりに「落花生まんじゅう」を買って帰宅した。なかなか充実した、よい旅行だった。
