今日のお題は「単数なのか複数なのか？」
日本語ではそもそも単数か複数かでその他の語に影響を及ぼすということが無いため、
根本から理解しにくいものの一つです。
紛らわしいものシリーズ！
これは単数
The football team wants to win.
これは複数
The football team put on their uniforms.
この違いは、チーム全体としてのことを言っているか、チームのメンバー一人一人を指しているのかということですね。
これは単数
The newly married couple is happy.
これは複数
A couple of people were late for the wedding.
これも、最初の文は、カップルを一つのものとしてとらえています。
これは単数
Five hundred dollars is a lot of money.
これは複数
We have a problem:five hundred-dollar bills are missing.
これは単数
Thirteen pounds is a lot for a newborn baby to weigh.
これは複数
I feel fat. Thirteen of these extra pounds need to come off.
これは単数
Three hours is a long time to wait.
これは複数
Three separate hours on three separate days were needed to finish the exam.
これは単数
The number of kids here is surprisingly large.
これは複数
A number of kids are here.
注）the number は単数、a number of は複数になります。

All the cake is gone.
これは複数
All the boys are gone.
これは単数
Most of the pie was eaten.
これは複数
Most of the hot dogs were eaten.
はぁ～。。。ややこしいですね。
