「赤と黒」を読んだ

スタンダールの代表作である「赤と黒」を読みました。

ずっと読もうと思っていましたが、この前読んだニーチェの「この人を見よ」にスタンダールの名前が挙がっていたので買ってみました。

結構長いので時間はかかりましたが、オースティンの「傲慢と偏見」のようにさっと読める感じです。

スタンダールの恋人がモデルのマチルドと母がモデルのレナール夫人との恋と、また野心に燃えるジュリアンの階級を超える程の飛躍がメインのお話しです。

現実の事件が元になっているこの作品は、鋭い社会風刺と緻密な心理描写がなされています。

当時からジュリアンの性格は批判されていたようですが、やはり少し現実味がありません。

突発的で野心的で、サヴァン症候群並の記憶力を持っています。

多分ジュリアンが美貌を有していなかったらこうまで上に上がる事は無かったのだろうと思いますが、ジュリアンに敵が多いのもまた同様の理由なのかなと思います。

読んでて一番グッと来たシーンは、ジュリアンが死を前にしてお金や地位や名誉ではなく、ヴェルジーのような山奥で静かに日を送る事こそが「本当の幸せ」だったという事を見出したところです。

「野心」という目的を持ってずっと頑張ってきたジュリアンが全てを失い、死と向き合って初めて気がついた幸せ。

これに対し、美貌、財産、地位、権力、名誉――幸福以外の全てを持って生まれてきたマチルドにとって初めて見つけた幸せはジュリアンに対する恋心でした。

幸福の定義は個人によって変わると思いますが、凄く考えさせられる小説でした。

因みにジュリアンの最後まで神を疑い続けた姿勢がニーチェにも通じるものがあったのだと思いました。

スタンダールのお墓はモンマルトルにあるらしいのですが、僕が行った時はそんな事はつゆ知らずだったので確認してないです。

墓碑銘は有名な「ミラノ人アッリゴ・ベイレ 書いた　愛した　生きた」です。

また今度パリに行ったら見に行こうと思います。



2014年ボストンキャリアフォーラム:(

先週末あったボスキャリに行ってきましたが、昨年同様撃沈しました。

金融はやっぱり向いていないのかも知れません。

今の所、このまま内定を貰っているコンサルティング・ファームに就職する可能性が高いです。

海外での就職も考えていますが、難易度が高いので多分このまま東京勤務だと思います。

いずれにしてもしっかりと頑張って知識・経験・スキルを積み上げていこうと思います。

ジョン・ケリーの講義

先々週あたりに、合衆国国務長官のジョン・ケリーがSAISにて講演をしました。

トピックは中米問題で、APECのミーティングの前のスピーチという感じでした。

中国とアメリカは経済規模でも最大の2国で、環境問題など様々な問題に協力して取り組んでいくべきと言っていました。

因みに中国の在米国大使の崔天凱（SAIS卒業生）も来ていました。

アメリカのメディアよりもCCTVの取材が来てたように思えます。



大学院出願時の推薦状申請用ガイドライン

ある方からご要望があったので、ここに推薦状を書いて貰う際に提出すべきガイドラインを掲載します。
このままWordにコピペして情報を書いていけばいいと思います。

Your checklist for recommendations:

Program Info: The name of the director of the program you are applying for and the physical address.

Dates and details: Give me dates and envelopes with addresses for all the schools you want recommendations for. Please prepare the following questions for each separate school since their requirements and emphasis could be different.

Forms and Instructions: Give me all the specific forms and any instructions that have been supplied by each school about how the recommendation needs to be written. If there are no forms, supply any other type of information that may exist, such as website or url addresses.

School and department you are applying for: If you are trying to get into a special program within a department (such as conflict management within international relations), please explain the exact focus of that department and why you are interested in it (The more you know about the school, the more professional you seem and the better will my letter of recommendation be).
CV that lists jobs related to your field of study, or a list of activities and jobs that you think have contributed to your interest in your field of study: In other words, you don't have to tell me that you have flipped burgers at McDonalds, but you can tell me that your experience of meeting new immigrants as a head janitor at Home Depot led you to want to explore the world and culture that they are come from that would be valid. If you have a finished CV or resume, just supply that and highlight things that you think are relevant (most schools have a professional guidance counselor that you can ask about resume/CV format).

The "Revelation:" Was there a moment, or revelation, that made you want to choose your field of study, or simply just get an education?

Your dream: what would you like to do with your education?

Activism/Extra-curricular activities: Anything that can strengthen the image that you are trying to build to the admission officials such as competitive sports, political activism during the last elections, volunteer/charity activities, internships, travel, family, or cultural experiences, church activism or musical talent (not including singing in the shower!)
Sign any forms and put them in the right envelopes: sign all the required forms and make sure you waive your right to ever reading the recommendation (this is important as it is seen as more professional).

The IDEAL recommendation request has already been written: Put all the information that you think needs to go in a letter into complete sentences and ask the recommender to spruce it up, edit, and add the adjectives. Don't forget to hand in all the supporting evidence.

フランシス・フクヤマの講義

今週はフランシス・フクヤマがSAISに講義に来ました。

元々僕はサミュエル・ハンティントンが好きなので、彼の元で学んでいたフクヤマもまた大好きです。

今回は「Political Order and Political Decay: From the Industrial Revolution to the Globalization of Democracy」という本に関する講義でした。

因みに講義の後は本を買ってサインと握手をして貰いました。




講義の内容自体は前作の「The Origins of Political Order」のアイディアで、「安定した国」の条件である「強くて近代的」「法律」「アカウンタビリティ」を述べた後に色々な国に当てはめて説明していました。

因みにどれか一つでも欠けていると長期的に国はうまく機能しなくなると言っていました。

英語版のウィキで調べると詳しく載っています。

その後、「家産制国家」から「近代国家」への移り変わりの難しさを挙げ、「Political Decay」の部分でアメリカは「Interest Group」に政策を左右されるから今らに「Clientalism」が根付いていると主張していました。

非常に面白い講義だったと思います。

ほぼ毎日誰かがSAISに来てレクチャーしている（例えば最近だとAlbrightなど）ので、また有名人が来たり行くチャンスがあればブログに書いていこうと思います。
