18．home page?
インターネットというものが何年頃から一般化したのか、私ははっきりとは知らないのであるが（小山田注１）、このインターネット関連でいわゆる「ホーム・ページ」というカタカナ語が一般化してきたのである。２～３年前（注２）に「ホーム・ページ」に当たる英語は「home page」であるのかどうか、ごく近年に英米で刊行された英英辞典数冊に当たってみたが、そのうちの１冊を除いてどれにも見当たらなかったのである（注３）。 home pageという語を登載しているただ１冊の英英辞典とは,
Longman Exams Dictionary (2006, Harlow, England)
である。この辞書によって home page の意味記述を見てみよう。
“the first page of a website, which often contains links to other pages on that website”
つまり多くの website は数ページの webpages から成っている。その第一ページのことを home pageと呼ぶことがあるということである。
日本語の「ホーム・ページ」は、その数の点ではっきりしていないのに対し、英語の home pageは web pages の第一ページのことだけである。
注１：インターネット自体は、前身も含めればアメリカで1960年代から存在し、日本でも1980年代からパソコン通信がありましたが、WINDOWS 95 が発売された1995年以降、及びブロードバンド回線が普及しだした2000年以降と考えられます。
注２：本原稿は2010年のもので、その２～３年前なので2007～2008年頃と言えます。
注３：現行のオンライン英英辞典を調べると、次のように載っていました。おおむね、上記の定義に沿っています。
