聖書は言う。偶像を拝む者には三、四代に至るまで呪いが及ぶが、神を愛する者には千代に至るまで祝福が及ぶ。
アブラハムの父は偶像を作り、それを売り、人々に拝ませていた。しかし神はアブラハムに祝福を与えようとされた。神はアブラハムにこう語られた。
「あなたは自分の国と親族と父の家を離れ、わたしが示す地へ行きなさい。」
アブラハムの家系には恐れと偽りの呪いがあった。アブラハム自身もパロの前で妻を妹だと偽った。その偽りはイサクやヤコブの代にも繰り返された。しかし神は、なおも彼らに千代に及ぶ祝福を与えようとされた。ヤコブの時代になって、偽りや世を優先する心が罪であることを悟り、彼は神と格闘した（罪との格闘）。その後、神は彼に新しい名を与えてこう言われた。
「あなたはもはや名をヤコブと言わず、イスラエルと言いなさい。あなたが神と人とに、力を争って勝ったからです。」
The Bible says: those who worship idols will be cursed to the third and fourth generation, but those who love God will be blessed to a thousand generations.
Abraham’s father made idols, sold them, and caused people to bow down to them. Yet God desired to bless Abraham. God spoke to Abraham, saying:
“Leave your country, your relatives, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you.”
In Abraham’s household there was a curse of fear and deceit. Abraham himself lied before Pharaoh, saying his wife was his sister. That same deceit continued in the generations of Isaac and Jacob. But God still desired to pour out His blessing to a thousand generations. In Jacob’s generation, he came to realize that lying and prioritizing the world were sins, and he wrestled with God (a wrestling with sin). Then God gave him a new name, saying:
“Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have wrestled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
