Many people, especially in the younger generation, say: “God told me He will use me, so until He moves, I will do nothing.” But God’s promise is not merely an instruction to wait. God gives commands along with His promises. Just as He said to Abraham, “Leave your country, your relatives, and your father’s house,” so when we receive a promise, we must move forward in prayer, discerning what it is that we must do.
After Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, their descendants gradually forgot God’s promise. So God spoke again to Israel: “You have things you must do.”
What we must do is to humble our hearts and receive training. God promised Abraham that He would make him the source of blessing and give him the land of Canaan. Therefore, we must keep our first devotion, declaring and praying each morning. Otherwise the promise will fade, and we will fall into a state where God’s work is hindered. The Israelites’ training in the wilderness was so that God might humble them, to prevent pride, and to prepare them to take possession of the land of Canaan. What God required in the wilderness was this: “Only believe, and keep all the commandments I have given you.”
Yet reality is not easy. God says:
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.”
It would be such a blessing if God always made clear what we should do. But in reality, 80–90% of people are uncertain about what they should do. At such times false prophets appear, and there are those who deceive people with material things and what can be seen.
Even when someone is not worthy before God to receive a promise, that promise may be given instead to another who is prepared and worthy. When Jesus called His disciples, He said: “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” If I am not made ready as a vessel to receive, God may still make me realize it through a casual word from someone or through a message delivered to me.
To the rich young ruler in Scripture, God also required only one thing:
“Give up what you have, and come with only a heart that loves Me.”
多くの人々、特に青年世代はこう言う。「神が私を用いるとおっしゃいました。だから神が何かをなさる時まで、私は何もしません。」しかし神の約束は、ただ待てという言葉ではない。神は約束と共に命令を与えられる。アブラハムに「自分の国と親族と父の家を離れよ」と言われたように、約束を受けたなら、祈りの中で自分がすべきことは何かを見分けつつ進んで行かなければならない。
アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの後、子孫たちは代を経るうちに神の約束を忘れてしまった。そこで神はイスラエルに再び語られた。「あなたがたには、しなければならないことがある。」
私たちがすべきことは、自分の心を降し、訓練を受けることである。神はアブラハムに、彼を祝福の源とし、カナンの地を与えると約束された。神様の約束の前で私たちは毎日、初心を保ち、朝ごとに宣言し、祈らなければならない。そうしなければ、約束もかすみ、神が働けない状態に陥ってしまう。イスラエルの民が荒野で訓練を受けたのは、彼らが高ぶらず、カナンの地を得るために神の前でへりくだらせる過程だった。神が荒野で彼らに求められたことは、「ただ信じなさい。わたしが命じたすべての戒めを守りなさい。」ということだった。
しかし現実は簡単ではない。神はこう言われる。
「いつも喜びなさい。絶えず祈りなさい。すべてのことに感謝しなさい。」
神が私のすべきことを明確に示してくだされば、どんなに感謝なことだろう。しかし実際には、八〜九割の人が何をすべきか分からず迷っている。その時、偽りの預言者たちが現れ、物質や目に見えるものによって人々を惑わすのである。
ある人が神の前に約束を受けるにふさわしくない時には、その人への約束を、ふさわしい誰かが代わりに受け取ることがある。イエスが弟子たちを召されたとき、「わたしについて来なさい。あなたがたを人間をとる漁師にしてあげよう」と言われた。もし自分が受ける器として備えられていないなら、神は誰かの何気ない一言や語られる御言葉を通しても気づかせてくださる。
聖書の金持ちの青年にも、神はただ一つを求められた。
「持っているものを捨てて、わたしを愛する心だけを持って来なさい。」
