本日は、実践ビジネス英語 A Word to the Wise（助言をひと言）の第4回目です。
■ from all and sundry
「ありとあらゆる人から」という意味です。形式的で古めかしい響きがありますが、現代でも良く使うとのことです。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
The company has sent invitations to all and sundry. This will be a huge event.
■ scads of advice
「たくさんの助言」という意味で、adviceは質量名詞なので複数形はとりません。動詞はadviseです。
■ be addicted to
「･･･に依存している」という意味です。
■ not do any good
「何の役にも立たない」という意味で、 have no good effectということです。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I restarted my computer but it didn't do any good.
■ overrate
「過大評価する」という意味で、反対語はunderrateです。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
That hotel is overrated. It is very expensive but the rooms are small and the service is so so.
■ come in all (sorts of) shapes and sizes
「様々な種類がある」という意味で、there is a wide variety of somethingということです。単にcome in all shapes and sizesとも言います。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Tax breaks come in all shapes and sizes.
■ unsolicited
「求められていない」、「おせっかいな」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I hate getting unsolicited calls from telemarketers.
■ respond with
「･･･で応える（応じる）」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
When we tried to cancel our contract, they responded with a lawsuit.
■ give someone and out
「（人）に言い訳を与える」という意味で、provide an exit in case they need itということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
The three month trial period gives the company an out if and employee isn't a good fit.
■ further down the road
「将来」、「この先」という意味で、later onとかin the futureと同義です。また、down the lineとも言います。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
We will probably move to a bigger office a few years down the line.
