本日は、実践ビジネス英語 A Word to the Wise（助言をひと言）の第5回目です。
■ counterproductive
「逆効果の」、「逆効果を招く」という意味です。
Losing our temper in an argument is counterproductive.
■ bristle
動詞としては、「（怒りなどで毛が）逆立つ」、「苛立つ」、「憤然とする」という意味で、get angryということです。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He bristled when our boss criticized his presentation.
■ come over all superior
「偉そうにする」という意味で、come over all ･･･というと、「･･･の強い印象を与える」、･･･「のように振る舞う」ということを意味します。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He came over all Mr. know-it-all. know-it -all 知ったかぶって
■ no uncertain terms
「ずけずけと」、「単刀直入に」という意味です。 noとunという2つの否定表現の入った二重否定で、言い換えるとvery clearlyとかin a stroong and direct wayいうことです。同じような二重否定表現にno-nonscense（生真面目な）があります。
■ well-meant
「善意の」、「善意から出た」という意味で、well-meaningとかmean wellという表現もあります。
■ Never pass up a chance to learn.
「学ぶ機会を決して逃すな」という意味です。pass upは「見逃す」という意味で、forgo some opportunityということです。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
This salary is too high to pass up.
■ higher-up
「上司」、「お偉方」という意味で、複数形はhigher-upsです。なお、反対表現のlower-downsという用法はなく、直属の部下はdirect reportとなります。
■ if need be
「必要とあらば」という意味で、if necessaryということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I can come in on Saturday if need be.
■ trick
「こつ」、「秘訣」という意味です。
