実践ビジネス英語 Memorable Public Service Announcements（心に残る公共広告）の第3回目です。
■ cover[touch] all the bases
「万全の手を打っておく」という意味です。一方、off baseは「見当違いの」という意味になります。
■ The voice-over went like this.
ナレーションはこんな具合でした。
■ food bank
「フードバンク（食品を無償で譲り受けて貧しい人たちに配給する活動を行う組織）」を意味します。
■ surplus food
「余剰食糧」の意味で、surplusはextraとかmore than neededということです。
■ best of all
「最も素晴らしいもの」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
It's large and conveniently located. And best of all, they are giving us a big discount."
■ get the message across
「メッセージを伝える」という意味で、convey what you want to sayということです。
また、get the messageと言えば、understand what someone is telling youということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I have told him a hundred times to be punctual. But he hasn't gotten the message.
■ perspective
「考え方」、「見方」という意味で、outlookとか、point of viewなどと同じような意味です。
■ stand out in someone's mind
「（人）の心に強く印象に残る」、「（人）の心に焼き付いている」という意味で、make a particular impression on someoneということです。単に、stand outと言うこともできます。次のような例文が挙げられていました。

■ school absenteeism
「不登校」、「登校拒否」を意味します。通常、absenteeismというと「職場における常習的な欠勤」を意味します。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
The airline company fired some employees over absenteeism.
■ as the years go by
「年月が経つにつれて」という意味です。as years go byとも言いますが、ビニェットでは、定冠詞（the）がついています。ということは、漠然とした年月でなく、theを付けて「不登校の期間」を表しているということだと思われます。
