■ make for
「生み出す」といった意味で、createやlead toと同義です。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Open communication and cooperation make for a good working environment.
■ if you don't mind me saying so
「そう言っても差し支えなければ」、「言わせてもらえば」という意味で、if you don't mind my saying soとも言います。また、if you don't mind me....とか if you don't my asking....といった関連表現があります。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
If you don't mind my asking, how much did your condominium cost?
■ turn-off
「うんざりさせられるもの」、「興ざめさせられるもの」という意味です。
■ old fogey
「考えが古い人」という意味です。
■ for that matter
「ついでに言えば」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Running, or any kind of exercise for that matter, has many physical and mental benefits.
（ランニング、ついでに言えばあらゆる運動には、多くの身体的・精神的効用がある。）
■ in my book
「私の考え（意見）では」という意味で、in my opinionと同義です。
また、be in someone's good [ bad ] books というと、ある人から認められた[ 認められいない ]）人という意味になります。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
I have been in the director's bad book ever since I missed that deadline.
■ to the point
「要領を得た」、「適切な」という意味です。
■ stickler
「こだわる人」、「うるさい人」という意味で、後に続く前置詞はforが一般的です。
a stickler for grammar and spellingは「文法やつづりをやかましく言う人」という意味です。
■ mind you
「念のために言っておくが」という意味です。
■ mixed blessing
「両刃の剣、「痛し痒し」という意味で、something that brings good things and bad thingsということです。
