今日から Lesson10 Gentrification（ジェントリフィケーション）の第1回目です。
■ gentrification
「劣悪化した住宅地区の再開発による高級（住宅地）化」という意味です。
■ big-city kind of person
「大都会タイプの人間」という意味で、 city girl（boy）と同義です。反対語は、country typeあるいは、country boy（girl）となります。
■ take to life in the Big Apple
「ビックアップル（ニューヨーク）での生活が好きになる」という意味で、この場合take to は、conceive a liking for somethingということです。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He never really took to working in the sales department.
■ in a big way
「大いに」という意味で、to a great degreeとかin a striking fashionということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
Investors lost money in a big way last quarter.
■ luck out
「（非常な）幸運に恵まれる」、「（運よく）事が運ぶ」という意味で、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
We lucked out and found a hotel room during Obon.
また、luck into（運よく手に入れる）という用法もあり、次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He lucked into a great first boss. That man was a wonderful mentor.
■ plush
「豪華な」、「ぜいたくな」という意味で、luxuriousやfancyと同義です。
■ renaissance
「復興」、「復活」、「再生」という意味で、rebirthやrevivalと同義です。
また、renaissance man（woman）といいえば、「幅広い野に知見がある人」や「複数分野の専門家」を意味します。次のような例文が挙げられていました。
He is a renaissance man; fluent in three languages and well versed in science and literature.
■ drop-off
名詞で「減少」という意味で、decline in somethingということです。
次のような例文が挙げられていました。
There was a sharp drop-off in sales after the government subsidy program ended.
また、drop offはハイフンなしで動詞としても使用します。
■ crack cocaine epidemic
「クラックコカイン（高純度コカイン）の流行」の意味で、epidemicは、「（病気などの）流行」を意味します。
