Tomorrow will be the Christmas day, “the gift of the magi” is one of the most popular novels of O. Henry, as you know.

The story tells that love of two young couples, named Jim and Della.  

They are too poor to buy a wonderful, suitable, memorable gift each other even they cut their expense as possible as they could. They had two possessions which they valued. One was Jim’s gold watch, and the other was Della’s nice waterfull hair.

Della sold her hair to buy the silver chain to his gold watch. Jim sold his gold watch to buy the combs which Della wanted ever since she saw them. Both Della’s hair and Jim’s watch had gone.

書ききれないほど、愛情が深いことを感じる。英語力がなくて、伝わりにくいが、DellaがJimにsilver chainsを見せた時に、”Let us put our Christmas gifts away and keep them a while. They are too nice to use just right now."というJimaの対応もすごく涙を誘う。

もしも、もらったプレゼントが無用のものとなっても、お互いのために考えてくれたという行為に感謝する。このことは日頃でもよくある。患者は結果ではなく医師がどれだけ時間を割いてくれたかに感謝することもある。

たとえ、どれほど高価なものをもらったとしても、それが自分の意図にそぐわないのであれば、やはり感謝はされない。その時だけ、相手のことを考えたとしても、本当にその人にとって大切なものをプレゼントすることは難しく、日頃からその相手を大事にしていることが重要である。もしかすると、あまり悩まなくても、相手のことをいつも考えながら生きていれば、相手が何を欲しているか自然とわかるかもしれない。

近年、プレゼントが定番化しているように思う。女性相手であれば、ネックレス、イヤリング、指輪といった装飾品、カバン、時計、財布。男性もほぼ同様でネクタイやネクタイピンなどもここに含まれるだろう。季節に即したプレゼントとしてマフラー、手袋なども含まれると思う。Dellaがいう通り、something fine and rare, something close to being worthy of the honor of belonging to Jim.そういったものを探す必要があると思う。

この人は何を最も望んでいるのだろう。それを考えると、自分は何を望んでいるのだろうと自己分析することにもつながる。
