明日で7月が終わり、いよいよ8月を迎える。
そこで、しばらくお目にかかっていないHさんを
ランチにお誘いした。
Hさんは、昔の職場（40年前）の先輩である。
Hさんから、色々仕事を教えて頂いた。当時の私の仕事は、
定期預金係で、テラーと呼ばれる受付係の後ろで、端末を
操作して、定期預金証書を作成したり、お通帳に入金する
作業をしていた。
“その日の勘定が一円でも合わなければ家に帰れない”という
のは事実で、ある日、なんと、私が、勘定が合わない原因と
なった。自分が原因になるとは夢にも思わない私は、「早く
勘定が合わへんかな」と思いつつ、その日使用した書類を
綴じる作業をしていた。そしたらですね、私の使っていた端末
から、他の書類に混ざって、伝票が挟まったままのお通帳が
発見された。伝票には出納係の端末の印字があった。
ということは、お客様から現金を預かったのにも関わらず、
お通帳に入金処理されていないことを意味する。
Hさんは、大きな声で、「すみません」と、その場にいた人
全員に謝り、「早よ、伝票打ちや」と、優しく私に指示して
くれた。
今も、私の大切な先輩です。
Tomorrow marks the end of July and finally, it is August.
So I invited H-san, whom I have not seen for a while, to
lunch.
H-san was my senior at my old workplace (40 years ago),
and she taught me many things about my job. At that
time, my job was a time deposit clerk, operating a terminal
behind a teller (a receptionist) to prepare time deposit
certificates and deposit them into a bank book.
It is a true that “if the day’s account is not settled even for
a yen, you cannot go home.” Never in my wildest dreams
did I think I would be the cause of the problem, and I was
working on the paperwork I had used that day, thinking,
“I cannot wait to see if the account will be settled.
Then, you see, a bankbook was found in the terminal I was
using, mixed in with the other documents, with a deposit
slip of paper still tucked in. The slip had the printout of the
cashier's terminal. This meant that although cashier had
received cash from the customer, the deposit had not been
processed in the bankbook.
H-san apologized in a loud voice to everyone present,
saying, “I'm sorry,” and told me kindly, “Process the voucher
quickly.”
She is my dear “senior.”
