Vol.71 Kahori Maki: “Moonlight”
Kahori Maki: “Moonlight”
I received a beautiful Princess from Tokyo today.
It is one of seven princesses that Kahori Maki
, the acclaimed illustrator,
painter, drawer, video and installation artist, creates.
I met her when she drew several works for Harper’s Bazaar Japan.
Many of her works had been used by firms such as, Comme des Garcons,
Levi Strauss, Shiseido, and she had ten solo shows since 1995.
When I published a book of my mother’s haiku poetry three years ago,
I asked her to illustrate it, because I loved her touch of fantasy.
“My Princess” was one of her works exhibited this summer in Seibu
and Sogo department stores.
Ms. Maki sent me this message :
“Moonlight”
I will go see the beginning of seasons
After going through the forest, another long road with moonlight
Take a deep breath, and I go to the moon world again
There were seven princesses…
Now one of the princesses has come from Tokyo to New York to begin
a new life in my apartment. Where should I put her?
On a table in the living corner?
On the dining table with a photograph by Javier Gomez ?
Or on the cabinet with an antique Japanese vase, a gift from Lam
,
a Chinese American art collector, art gallery owner.
I still can’t decide where to put my Princess, who I call “Luna”.
I am writing this article at the beginning of the September New Moon.
Luna and I pray that my dreams for it will come true.
I wish that your dreams come true for you as well.
