Emily : Hey friends! It's your girl Emily Curl, and we're back here at our iHeart Radio Studios, hanging out in our New York headquarters. And we're here with artist, actor, creator, you all are going to be so excited for this one, Troye Sivan is here! Can we give it up for joy, that dramatic pause, I had to do it, joy! We're so happy to have you here.

Sivan : Wow, it's just been like the craziest journey. I feel like, I've been making music for a long time, and so to have it go like this now, is, um... it's really nice. It just feels very good, and I'm happy that it's kind of like happening when it's happening, because, I feel very relaxed, and like you know, whereas I think when I first started, I probably would have been like freaking out.

I feel like, everything that I'm doing at the moment, is like, for that kid, you know what I mean, like, without sounding too corny, it's like, this is all I've ever wanted, and, especially like to really do it in pop. I just started doing the Corio stuff, and, we're making these like big music videos in these amazing places, and it just kind of feels like, I think exactly what I wanted like, since the day I was born basically, yeah.

Emily : You also, at that time, came out publicly online, and this was a huge moment, because you were a Pioneer for so many people, you are beac for so many people, and to be so, you know sure of yourself, and so confident such a young age is really incredible. Did you have any idea of the impact, that would have on people on your fans?

Sivan : I kind of did know, only because, when I was sort of coming out to myself and figuring all that out, I went online, and I watched YouTube videos of other people coming out, and like, you know, videos of people coming out to their families, and now thinking back on it, it's kind of wild that people did this, but they would like set up the camera, and be like coming out to my mom, and like film the experience you know. And those videos you know, helped me, kind of like build the confidence, and made me realize, I didn't know any queer people in real life, so you know, the internet was my sort of resource, for all the information and support, and so I knew, how important those videos could be, and I, at that time, I had a platform you know, and like an audience on the platform, and I just decided, it was like my turn, to kind of like, give that you know to the community that helped me so much.

Emily : Yeah. You mentioned, looking up to people who were like queer artists or other creators online, maybe that you watched, or that you saw.

Sivan : Oh so many, I honestly don't really remember that usernames, because I would just like search coming out, and I would like open 50 tabs, and just watch all of the videos, but, um... yes, I don't remember specifics, but, like you know someone like Tyler Oakley, or like people that were just openly gay online, or openly queer online, that hugely helped.

Emily : That's amazing, and then, like we said, let's talk about "Rush" again. Because, this is so exciting to watch. What's it like for you, being on the side, not only to see your fans connect, but to have song that's so successful, just across the board. We get to just enjoy it, and have fun with "Rush", but you get to see the back end. What's that like, for you to watch that unfold?

Sivan : Well, I get to enjoy it too. Now you know, like I think, um... yeah, I
I don't know it, just, it felt kind of like immediate the first time, when we wrote the song, and I was really excited. I played it for my sister, and some of her friends, and they all kind of like, stood up immediately, as I started playing it. This is like, when I was working on it, and so I knew that there was like something you know, um... but I could never have expected, like the way that it's gone, it's been really cool.

Emily : Can we talk about the music video? For a the music video second, my God, I love it. We have it on repeat, it's so good. I feel like, it's like the sexy single anthem like. Tell me about the creative Direction, and I'm also curious who you work with, when you're doing something like this to come up with the ideas and the vision.

Sivan : I'm working with a friend, that I've been friends with for a really long time, and we had never worked together, and he's like a fashion filmmaker, and so, he had never made a music video. We kind of met, and I was like, I think, you know, I would love to work with you, on all of the videos for the whole album, if you're down, and we kind of like formed this little partnership, and when it came time to do "Rush", I was explaining to him, I was like, it needs to just be like the funniest party in the world, and we can't fake it. It has to be like totally real, and it was his idea, he was like, "Well, should we go to Berlin?" And I was like, "Yeah, we should probably go to Berlin!". So, we went to Berlin, and we filmed for, like, you know two days, and we spent like a week. There was doing dance rehearsals and stuff, and it was so fun! I mean, like in the shots, none of that was like choreographed, or set up, or anything like except for the choreography itself, like, everything was just real. We were just having a really good time, and filming it, was a really special time, yeah.

Emily : It's so cool of it, this was his first music video, and you're so involved in fashion you know? Are you working together, like, are your favorite designers are you mood boarding like? What does that process look like, especially, when it comes to fashion?

Sivan : Yeah, we just like, speak all day basically, and text back, and forth and constantly sending each other hair references, or you know, clothes that we like, or you know, if something is shot super beautifully, I'll sent it to him, like yeah, it's kind of a constant dialogue, and we just kind of got into each other's head, but I also think, it helped because I've never had a creative director, before that works across the entire album, and so, I think, it helped that, from day one, we kind of had the whole album mapped out visually, like what we wanted to do, and so I think, that really helps inform all of our decisions, like "Oh, this is such a 'Rush' outfit" or this is such a "Rush", you know, like, makeup look, or something like that, knowing, kind of where we're going with everything.

Emily : So, were you working in, or had the music already been created?

Sivan : So, the music had been created, when we would meet, I kind of played him, the first three songs, so "Rush" "Got me started" and then "One of Your Girls", I kind of mapped out. This is sort of the moments, that I want to hit with the album.

Emily : So exciting, and the album's out now, congratulations! "Something to give each other", you called this your ”most liberating album” so far, and that was interesting to me, what does that mean to you?

Sivan : The interesting thing about the album is, it's so much about everyone else. It's like very communal, you know, it's like, all about community and togetherness, and like, love. But equally, at the same time, it really comes from a place of like liberation of myself, where I felt like, you know, I went through this big breakup, and then, I just felt like, I was like, meeting myself again, and kind of like, coming into my own, and, you know, there's something sad about going through the world on your own, but then, there's something so freeing and beautiful. When you realize that, you're actually like not at all on your own, and that once you're okay with yourself, and you open up your like heart and mind to the people around you. There's like Beauty everywhere, and you just have to kind of like be open to receiving it, in all of its different forms, you know.

Emily : I mean, I know the feeling surprises, I feel like everyone's been through heartbreak, before you re-discover all these different things about yourself, through this process. Is there anything that surprised you? Maybe, that you discovered about yourself, I think.

There was not as many like ups and Downs I don't think, um... which was cool to learn about myself, and then, I also learned that I'm definitely shy, not shy, but like more sort of introverted, um...but, that doesn't mean, that I don't love being social, you know, and I think, I just kind of built my confidence a little bit more to like go to a place by myself, like go to a party by myself, and you know meet people, and like those were all things that would have really scared me, I think before, and thought that, I wouldn't be able to do that, and then, out of necessity. You just kind of you're like, "Oh, okay, I guess I can do that!". And I'm like, you know, pretty good at it you know, yeah.

Emily : You also talked about, how it's stories about the beauty of brevity of sharing a fleeing moment with someone? Does a particular story, or person come to mind for you for this?

Sivan : Not really, honestly. It's a few stories, um... but, just like really special experiences with people, that I'm so thankful for all of them, I feel like, every time I connect with someone, I learn something, about myself, and obviously a lot about them, and, just like about people in general, and like relationships in general, and I think, prior to this time in my life. I'd only ever known, one type of relationship you know, um... and I think, realizing that no one is sort of greater than the other. They're all just kind of different, and they, all they all have something to offer you, or like, we all have something to give each other, that was kind of, where the album concept came from, yeah.

Emily : So, let's talk new single about your new single "Got Me Started".

Sivan : Yeah, so this one, um... if "Rush" is like day party, hot sweaty, "Got Me Started" is, um... so much more like night and like neon, and the visual kind of popped into my head immediately, but, it's really about like feeling emotionally like dead for a while, which I think is really natural after a big experience like that. And then, it's about those kind of first sparks, where you start to see yourself come back to life a little bit, where someone, can you meet someone and you feel like the butterflies again, for the first time or whatever, and it's really about that moment.

Troye Sivan has announced details of a huge UK and European tour for 2024.
The tour is in support of Sivan’s acclaimed album ‘Something To Give Each Other’, which was released back in October. The record – Sivan’s first in five years – scored the Australian a glowing five-star review from Nick Levine for NME. Levine wrote: “It’s a strikingly vital pop album charged with love, lust, sweat and regret. You won’t need a bosh of poppers to feel thoroughly intoxicated.”
Hailed by The Guardian as "one of this year's best and most distinctive pop albums" and celebrated by Rolling Stone as "a pristine slice of pop heaven," the Something to Give Each Other Tour is destined to be Sivan 's biggest, boldest and brightest tour.
Sivan’s 17-date run will begin in Portugal on May 29, 2024, before continuing throughout Europe. Sivan arrives in the UK on June 22 at the Manchester AO Arena; the tour will conclude in Birmingham.Tickets for the shows go on sale on December 8 at 9am.
