新井旅館では、平成１０年に国の有形文化財の登録を受け、
館内を御案内する
を１０時・１５時・１６時（１６時は宿泊者のみ）の３回
毎日行っています。
その案内でも話される 「新井旅館の歴史」 の一部を数回に分けて御案内しております。
Since 1998's registration of Arai's 15 structures as the national cultural assets,
we have operated Cultural Assets Guided Tour daily at 10 a.m.,
15 p.m. & 16 p.m.*(limited to guests). Here in this blog, we'd like to
introduce a series of Arai's History.

明治32年、二代目館主 相原平八 は、隣を流れる桂川から水を取り入れた造園を計画。
現在の新井旅館の基礎が確立してきました。
この年新築した雪の棟には、
「ホトトギス」出版で体調を壊した高浜虚子が約一ヶ月間療養をしております。
In 1899, the second generation master Aihara Heihachi decided to build a garden
where the water of Katsura River flows in, and the foundation of Arai Ryokan
gradually formed. A new wing, Yuki, was built in 1899. The celebrated poet,
Takahama Kyoshi, stayed at the new wing for about one month to recover
his health.
高浜虚子滞在に関しましては、
二代目平八の娘つる（三代目女将・のちに修善寺温泉の名物女将といわれる）が
お茶の水にあったニコライ神学校に通っていたのですが、
そこで親友となった大畠いとという女性がのちに高浜虚子夫人となり、
体調を崩した虚子に修善寺温泉での療養を勧めたようです。
虚子は亡くなる昭和34年までよく当館をご利用いただきました。
Tsuru, a daughter of the second generation master and later the third
generation landlady, was studying christanism at Nicolai Temple school
in Tokyo where she became a friend of Ohatake Ito, the later the wife of
Takahama Kyoshi and introduced Arai as the place of rehabilitation.
He made frequent visit to Arai until he died in 1959.
名物女将つるの交流はほかにもありました。
Tsuru made another friendship with a famous kabuki actor
while she was in Tokyo.

ニコライの神学校を卒業後、
同じ客商売ということで日本橋の藤村という待合に奉公に行っていましたが、
その藤村は中村歌六一家が贔屓にしており、
藤村の女将さんは、歌六一家が来ると、
子供上がりであった初代中村吉右衛門とつるを連れて
祭りなどへよく連れて行ってくれていたようで、
吉右衛門のことをつるは、「吉ちゃん 吉ちゃん」
つるのことは「新井屋の姉さん」と呼び合っていたそうです。
After graduating from the christian school, she worked for
a high-class Japanese style restaurant, Fujimura, in Nihonbashi,
Tokyo, The family of kabuki actor, Nakamura Utaroku, was one of
the restaurant patrons. When the family came to the restaurant,
the landlady took them to festivals or sightseeing with Tsuru and
Nakamura Kichiemon the 1st, a young kabuki actor. Tsuru looked
after Kichiemon well, and he called Tsuru " my sister of Arai"
そして、明治32年そのつるに婿を迎え、新井旅館は新たに歩み始めました。
And in 1932, Tsuru got married and Arai Ryokan made a new step to
the future.
