The series is in chronological order. Please excuse us if a story overlaps with
what has been introduced in previous blogs.
Arai's business establishment is in 1872 and by Aihara Heiuemon who
ran Japanese sake brewery in a village called Tachino in Shuzenji.
Later he moved to the present place to reestablish the hot spring of
legend, the spring of Ayame-Gozen, the wife of Shogun.
During the early period, he ran the business as lodging houses called "Kichin-yado".
The customers cooked their own foods and they paid the fee for firewood, hence
the name Kichin(firewood charge) derived. The original master also ran a shipping
agent and developed ryokan business.
In 1881, Seishurou, the oldest wing
of Arai, was built.

Seishurou in the early par of 1900's Present
Seishurou is located by the porch wing and faces to the main street.
The three-storied wing is built by the traditional castle architecture and has a tower
on the roof and the exterior design is European. In those days when it was built,
most of the houses were the folk style with thatched roof, so Seishurou was a topic
of the village.
The wing was built in the traditional architecture. Wood frame and four main pillars
stand on the layers of huge stones piled on excavated rock of lasnd form. The building
received no damage by the giant earthquake in 1905.
