St. Martin (オランダ語でSint Maarten)って知ってますか？云われによると、彼は冬の寒い中、何も着ていなかった乞食に彼のマントの半分を与えたとのこと。この行いから彼は与えることのシンボルのようになったとされています。彼のお葬式が執り行われた11月11日はSt. Martinの日としてヨーロッパでは広く祝われているのです。この日はここ、オランダでも祝われています。コンセプトはハロウィーンとよく似ますね。この元々のイベントとしては恵まれた人が貧しい人々に冬を越すための食べ物を分け与えるということのようでしたが、近年では子供達のお祭りとなっています。日が沈む頃から子供たちが家々を回ってSt. Martinの歌を歌い、歌い終わるとお菓子がもらえるのです。
Do you know Sint Maarten (St. Martin)? According to the story, he gave half of his cape to a poor person who didn't have any clothes. Because of this, he came to be seen as a symbol of sharing. 11th of November, the date of his funeral, is widely celebrated in Europe as St. Martin's day. This day is also celebrated here in the Netherlands. The concept is similar to Halloween. The origin of the feast is that wealthier people shared some of their food with poor people, but nowadays, it is a kind of festival where children go door to door after sunset and sing St. Martin's songs and get candy.
これ、うちの周りではかなりのイベントですよ。子供たちはこの歌を学校で習うし、暗い中を歩くためのランタンも学校で手作りするのですよ。ま、お菓子をたくさんもらえますからね、子供も喜んで参加する、と言うわけで。今年はヨーロッパのCovidー19の大蔓延でこのイベントどうなるんやろう？と心配しておりましたが、うちの周りでは通常通りにありました。イベントに参加するのが小さな子供たちだけということと、ここオランダ北部のCovid感染者数が少ないから、ストップがかからなかったのかもしれません。
It is quite serious here. Children learn the St. Martin's songs in school and make a lantern which they carry to walk around in the dark. Since children can get lots of candy, they are happy to participate in this event. This year, because of the wide spread of Covid-19 here in Europe, we wondered if this event would go on or not. But it went on normally, maybe because this is an event only young children participate in and maybe also because there are not so many covid cases here in the North of the Netherlands.
Boy２は学校から帰ってから（2時）すでに興奮状態。夕食を食べ終えると速攻お菓子ハントの旅に出ました。紙で作った手作りのランタンに小さな電気をつけて、いざ出陣です。
Boy2 was very excited already after he was back from school. After we finished eating dinner, he wanted to start immediately. We put a small light in his handmade lantern (paper craft) and off they went!
去年のBoy2はBoy1の後ろを恥ずかしそうについていくだけで、全く歌は歌っていませんでしたが（でもしっかりお菓子は頂いていた）、今年は歌ってましたよー。私は（コロナの規制のせいもあり）ちょっと離れて見ていました。コロナの規制の為、いくつかの家は扉をあけず、玄関にお菓子がたくさん入った箱を置いて、「私たちは今年は参加しません、歌を歌ったらお菓子を一つ取ってね」と書かれた紙を置いていたりしていました。我が家の子供たちは近所をぐるっと回って、お菓子を沢山いただき、満足気に家に帰ってきました。
Last year, boy2 was just shyly following Boy1, never sang (but still received candy), but he had grown into a fanatic this year. Boy2 joined the singing. I was just observing them from some distance (also because of Covid). As a corona prevention measure, some of the houses kept their door closed and put a sign and a box of candies outside saying, "we don't do this year. but you can take one candy after singing." The boys walked a small circle through the neibourhood, got a lot of candy and happily came back home.
何にせよ今年もできてよかった。うちにきた子供たちの数も例年よりはかなり少なかったですね。冬のオランダのメインイベント、シンタクラースさんもオランダにもう直ぐ到着ですが、どのようにするのやら・・・。
It was nice they still could do this. But the number of children who visited out house for singing was also fewer compared to the last year. Main event Sinterklaas arrival is coming soon. How that will be organized...
