うちの会社は田舎にあるからか敷地が割と広いのです。建物のないところは緑の広っぱになってます。夏になるとこの緑の部分、雑草がどんどん生い茂ってくるのですよね。去年までは誰かを雇って芝刈り用の車で雑草刈りをしてもらってましたが、去年からちょっとこの雑草刈りをお願いする会社が変わったのです。この会社、たくさんの羊と共にやってきます。
My office building has a relatively large green space around it. In the summer season, weeds inevitably take over. Until last year, the company hired somebody to cut those weeds with mowing machines. But since last year, we hire a different company to remove weeds. They come with many sheep.
そうです。この会社（個人事業かな？）たくさんの羊を連れてきて、伸び切った草を食べさせるのです。うちの会社もそこにお願いすることにしたみたいで。彼ら、トラックでやってきて、さささっと電気柵を張り巡らせ、羊たちを中に入れます。すごい速いし効率的。その場には立札も立っていて、どんな会社か、なんでやってるかてなことも書いてあります。
Yes. there is a kind of company (or a person?) that brings a number of sheep to a place to let them eat the overgrown lawns. Our company started using them. They arrive by truck and quickly prepare an electrical fence around the area, and then put sheep in. Very quick, very efficient. There is also a sign explaining what they are, and why they are there.
この羊たち、結構和ませてくれるんですよね。仕事中の窓からたまに走り回ってるのが見えたりして。
It is quite nice to have them. I can sometimes see them through our office window, running around.
下の写真は去年、彼らが初めてきた時。初めてこの羊たちを見た時、なんか尻尾のあたりに違和感があったのですよね。長くてふわふわな尻尾が下がってる。。羊って尻尾長かったけ？それともこの羊たち、特別な種類とか？
The picture below is from last year, when they came to our office area for the first time. I was surprised and confused when I saw their tails. Long fluffy tails were hanging from their backs. Do sheep have long tails? Is it a special kind?
私の記憶というかイメージする羊って、山羊のようにすごい短い尻尾だったのです。この違和感をスッキリさせるためにネットで検索して見ました。そこで見つかったなんだかちょっとえげつないお話。
My image of sheep is of animals with very short tails, similar to goats. As I couldn't stand my own confusion, I looked up in internet and found a somewhat nasty story.
羊の尻尾って昔短く切られていたそうなのです、少なくとも人間が飼っているものたちはね。理由は羊たちの健康と衛生問題。彼らがうんちをすると、そのうんちがふわふわの尻尾に引っ付いて、そこに細菌が繁殖することがあるんだそうな。その細菌たちは羊たちには良いものではなく、運が悪ければ死んじゃうこともあるらしいとのこと。うーむ。もっともな理由。でもその為に体の一部を切り取るというのは少し酷い気もしますね。最近では動物愛護の観点からもこの尻尾切りはあまり行われなくなったとのことですがね。ま、うちの会社に来ている子達を見ていると、正直、ふわふわの尻尾持ってても普通に元気にやってるようですね。
The tails of sheep used to be cut short, at least when they were kept by people. The reason was the sheep's health and hygiene. When they poo, the poo sticks to the fluffy tail, and in the end can cause bacteria growth. The bacteria are supposedly not good for the sheep and can sometimes kill them... Hmm... it is a good reason, but I think cuting a part of their body is a bit harsh. Recently cutting tails is not so common anymore because of animal welfare. So far, they seem pretty healthy with their tails, to be honest.
彼ら、なんでも食べるのです。この上の写真は去年、彼から移動する少し前のものです。すっかり食べられてスッキリ。彼らはとても効率的で可愛い自然の芝刈り機ってことですかね。
They eat absolutely everything. The picture above is just before they went away last year. Lawn was beautifully eten. They are very efficient and cute natural lawnmowers.
