小さい頃、NHKでやっていたアニメ、ニルスのふしぎな旅、私あの番組がすごい好きでよく見てました。オランダはニルスの舞台のスウェーデンからはまだだいぶ遠いのですが、ここでもあの旅する雁の群れが見られるのです。この季節、初夏はオランダにたくさん滞在していて、しかも繁殖期なのです。
When I was child, an animation program was broadcast by NHK: Nils Holgersson's Wonderful Journey. I really liked that program. After I came to the Netherlands, even though it is still far from Sweden, I can see those traveling geese here as well. In this season (early summer) they are here in the Netherlands and it is their breeding season.
オランダは低い国と呼ばれます。というのは陸地が海面と同じくらいの高さ。私の住んでいる町は少し海面よりも低いので、町中に運河がたくさん走っているのです。運河、緑地、運河、道、家、道、運河。。。と近所はそんな感じになってます。そして、この運河に挟まれた緑地部分に雁の群れがきて繁殖活動をするのです。雛が生まれ出す時期は可愛い姿が見られて、なかなかいいものですよ。
The Netherlands is a low lying country, meaning we are living roughly at sea level. The town I live in is a bit below sea level, and we are surrounded by many canals. Canal, green field, canal, road, houses, road, canal, our area is made up of things like that. So on the green parts in between the canals, those geese come every year and start breeding. It is so nice to see when they start having small chicks.
でも野生の生活って結構厳しくて、安全に見えるこの辺りでも、この小さな雛達が生き延びるのは簡単ではありません。猫、車、猛禽類など敵はいっぱいいます。毎年シーズン初めに見られた雛たちも大きくなる頃には約半数ほどに減っているものです。その理由の一つは彼らって注意深くないというかなんというか。。
But living in the wild is not always easy. It is tough to survive for the small chicks, even though the life here looks quite safe. There are enemies. Cats, cars, birds of prey, etc. Every year, the number of chicks observed in the early season is reduced by half at the end of their chick time... one of the reasons is because they are not very careful....
彼ら、水辺から水辺に、緑地から緑地に美味しい食べ物を求めて（？）常に移動しているみたいです。移動はいつもグループ行動。少なくとも２羽の大人の雁が先頭と最後尾にいて、間に雛たちを囲んでいるのです。作戦としては素晴らしいですよね。でもこの作戦が優れているからなのかなんなのか、彼らかなーりのんびりしていて、かなり頻繁に車道をゆっくり渡っていたり、車道上にぼーっと立っていたりするのです。
They are moving water to water, field to field to get better (?) food. They are always moving as a group. At least two adult geese are standing at the front and the back to lead the chicks in between. It is a good strategy. Maybe because of the good system, they are pretty relaxed and very often slowly cross big car roads, or just remain standing on them.
上の写真は高速道路の入り口です。テニスのレッスンが終わった午後9時半、家に帰るところでした。さぁ、高速に乗ろうと加速しようとした時です。その高速入口の車道ど真ん中に佇む雁の群れが（車のフロントガラスが汚くてごめんなさい）。下の写真は雨の日のマクドナルドの前の道路。私がBoy1とその道を通りかかった時でした。前の車が変なところで停まったかと思うと動かないのです。どうしたんやろう？と思って見ていると、前の車が何かを避けてようやく動いた先にはかなり大きな雁の群れが。反対側からマクドナルド側にみんなで渡ってきたようでした。
The picture above is the entrance of the high way. I finished my tennis lesson at 9:30 PM and was on my way to go home. When I accelarated to try to join the highway, there was a group of geese in the middle of the road.... (sorry for my dirty windshield). The picture below is in front of Mcdonald's on a rainy day. I was with Boy1 driving on the road next to it, a car in front of me stopped and didn't move for a while. We wondered what the car was doing. After the car finally moved away, I saw a huge group of geese moving to the Mcdonald's side of the road, from the other side.
どうも今年はこの茶色の雁の繁殖がかなり良いようで、うちの近所、この茶色雁だらけになってます。今年だけで道路上の雁に足止めくらったのが5回以上。なんかこの季節の風物詩になりつつありますねぇ。私も轢かないように気をつけて運転しないと。。。
It seems that these brown geese are very successful this year. They are seen everywhere. I encountered geese on the road and needed to wait until they had crossed already more than 5 times this year. It is becoming a seasonal tradition. This season, I should be extra careful not to hit them.....
