今回の旅行はフェリーで行ったので、自分の車で行けたのです。日本もイギリスも左側運転ということで、イギリス内はankoちゃんが運転してねと。私だけが左側運転をした経験があるからということらしい。でももちろん我らの車のハンドルは左側についてるんで、経験があるかといえば疑問なんだけど。ま、とりあえず、やってみましょうかね。ということで今日は私のイギリス内のドライブでのお話を少し。
We went by ferry, so we could bring our own car. Since the driving is done on the left in both Japan in UK, I was assigned to be the driver within UK. After all, only I have experience driving left side. But of course our car has left steering.... Anyway, let's try. Today I would like to write a bit about my experience driving in UK.
ところで、オランダの人、左側運転を「Wrong side driving （間違った側運転？）」というのですよー。いや、「right （右、正しいとも言う）」じゃないからって、間違ってないから！言葉のジョークですな。
By the way, Dutch people call left side driving "wrong side driving". Yes. It is not "right" but it is not "wrong"!
私、居眠り運転（と、それから引き起こした事故）の経験があるので、あまり一人で長距離運転の自信はないのです。なので、自分が運転手と言うことで、1日の走行距離はそこそこ（２時間半以内）に抑えました。（ま、その方が車内の時間も制限できて子供達にも良いですしね。）
Since I have a sleepdrive (and consequent accident) record, I am not so confident driving long distances alone. So I limited the distance per day (of course it is nice for children to limit the time in the car too).
フェリーを降りて、左側運転が始まりました。道端には３０と書かれた標識が。おお、結構ゆっくり？ん？まてよ。。。そうです。イギリスはkm/hじゃなくって、mile（約１.６km）/h。もちろん、そんな計算なんて準備しておりません。最初のうちは、えっと何キロくらいで走ったら良いんやろう？と頭を悩ませながらの運転でした。
After we got out from the ferry, the left side driving started. The road sign indicates "30". Wow, very slow... ? but wait.... this is not km/h but mile (about 1.6km)/h. Of course I didn't prepare this calculation, I struggled imagining how fast I was allowed to drive in the beginning.
Newcastleの港から出る道には、ものすごくラウンドアバウトがいっぱいありました。日本には基本的にラウンドアバウトはないので（私の知る限り）、これは全く初めてですよー、左回りのラウンドアバウト。しかも私が走った地域のラウンドアバウトは全てすでに入る前からラウンドアバウトに沿って曲がっていて、中に入るには曲がって入ってゆくと言うよりは、右側に進路変更すると行ったような形になっていました。これが左ハンドル車には非常に大変！右側に車が来ているかどうかを助手席に座るDrop越しに見てその隙間に入っていかないといけないわけですから。
There are unbelievably many roundabouts on the road to get out from Newcastle harbor. There are no roundabouts in Japan, so this was a first for me: left turning rundabouts. All roundabouts in the area I drove in started with a slight bend. So before joining the roundabout, you become almost parallel with the round-about. It was quite tough with a left side steering car! It was very hard to see if any car is coming as I would have needed to see that through Drop, who was sitting next to me.
追い越しも同じでした。高速道路では私は一番左端に座っているわけで、前の車を追い越そうとすると、自分から遠い、しかも早いスピードで走っている右側に走る車たちを見て動かないといけないわけです。簡単ではない。ふと思い出したのが、日本に住んでいた時、結構多くの友人が左ハンドルの外車に乗っていたと言うこと。私が今回経験したことを彼らは日常的に経験していたわけで。そんな思いまでしてなんで外車なんか乗ってたんやろう？高いし・・・ま、ええけど。
The same is true for overtaking. On the highway, I was sitting far left and if I wanted to overtake a car in front of me, I needed to see the traffic which was moving to the right of my car. That is not easy. Now I remembered that quite some friends of me in Japan used to drive imported, left steering cars... they were having this difficulty looking in traffic..... Now I wonder why they ever wanted such a car..... anyway...
今回訪れた土地は山岳地帯ではないものの、かなり高低差があるところでした。下道はそこにあった地面に忠実に沿って作られたと言う感じで、ものすごい急なアップダウンが次から次から続きます。なんか運転してながらジェットコースターにでも乗っているような感じ。我らのオートマの車で初めてローギア（Bってやつ）の必要性を感じました。（ま、この車を買ったのはオランダなので、ローギアなんて必要なわけがないのですが。笑）
The area we visited was not mountainous, but neverteless quite hilly. The local roads were just built straight across the surface of the land, so there were many steep ups and downs, one after another, giving feeling like we were on a roller coaster. For the first time with this car, I felt the need to use the low, climbing gear of our automatic car.... (of course we bought this car in the Netherlands, where I never need this low gear function...)
最高制限速度はどんなに狭くても普通の下道で60mile/hとのこと。ちなみに高速道路は70mile/h（大して差はない）。実はこれ、オランダに帰ってきてから調べたんです。現地にいるときは知らなくって、どれくらいで走ればいいんやろう？といつも考えながら走っておりました。制限速度が書かれた標識ってぜーんぜんなかったんですよね。結構なカーブに差し掛かると、標識が現れて「Slow！」と書いてあるのですが、いや、slowってどれくらいゆっくりやねん！って。こんな感じだったので、道中、めちゃめちゃ速い車に何度も追い抜かれましたよ。ま、私にはあんな狭い道をあんなに速くなんて走れっこないですからいいのですがね。
The maximum speed on normal roads seems to be 60 mile/h in UK even on very narrow country roads and 70 mile/h on the highway (not much difference). Actually I only looked this up after we were back to the Netherlands. That means I was guessing how fast I could/should drive all the time. There were no speed limit signs anywhere and when a big curve comes, a sign appears saying "slow". How slow is "slow"....? I was overtaken a lot by extremely fast drivers. I cannot drive so fast on such a narrow road....
ともかく、車内からの景色は常に美しかったです。運転に集中しないといけなかったため、あまり景色を楽しむことができなかったのがちょっと残念かな。
下の写真が私の達成記録。全走行距離：1413.3 km、燃費：4.６L/100km。悪くない。
Anyway, the view from the car was extremely beautiful almost all the time. I am a bit sad now that I couldn't enjoy the view so much because I needed to concentrate on driving....
Below was what I achieved. Total driving: 1413.3 km, consumption: 4.6 l/100km. Not bad.
