ここ、オランダ、学校の長期休みは地域によって少し異なります。国を3つに分けて、最初と2番目のグループは1週間違い。最初と最後のグループは2週間違いで夏休みが始まるのです。長さは同じ6週間。なのでみんなが休みという期間はその6週間中3週間だけということになります。そして自分がそのグループかというのは毎年変わリます（みんなに公平にする為？）。今年は我らの北部は最後のグループ。夏休みは７月21日から始まり、8月の末まで。日本と同じですかね。
In the Netherlands, school holidays are slightly different depending on the region where you live. The country is separated into three parts and there is a 1 week difference between the first and the second group and a 2 weeks difference between the first and the last group. The duration is 6 weeks but the completely overlapping period is only three weeks. And which group you are in changes every year (to make it equal for everybody?). This year, our region was the last group. The holiday started on 21 July and ends at the end of August.
私達は混雑を避ける為、この休みが被っている時期を避けて学校の夏休みの最後の時期に”短い”家族旅行に行くことにしました。多くのオランダ人は３週間とか長い旅行に行くんですよね。でも我らは春にすでに日本に行っているし、今回は”短め”に9日間。（ええ、日本の標準からするとこれでも随分長い旅行ですよね。）
２週前のある日、たくさんの荷物を車に積んで、自宅を出発しました。はい。車で行きました。ヨーロッパに住んでる利点は車で外国に割とたやすく行けることですかね。
We wanted to avoid the overlapping period and decided to go for a small trip almost at the end of the school holiday. Many Dutch people go to very long trips, like 3 weeks, but we already have been to Japan in spring so we chose to go on a 9 day trip this summer. (This is quite long by Japanese standards though.)
One day, we packed a lot of stuff into our car and started driving away from home. Yes. We went by car. It is a nice thing about living in Europe, to be able to drive across the border.
さて、我らはどこに行ったでしょう？それは後々語るとして。自宅を出て数時間、トイレ休憩に高速沿いの休憩所に止まりました。
So where was our destination? That, I will disclose later. After driving for a few hours, we stopped for toilet break along a highway.
”ベルリーナ”という名前のドーナツのようなものほうばる子供達（粉砂糖をまぶしたドーナツ、ジャム入り）。わかる人にはわかるかも。我らの休憩地点は隣国ドイツのどこか。自宅から１時間半ほどのドライブでドイツとの国境を越えることができます。
The children were happy to try a kind of donut called a "Berliner". Now you can see our stopping location was in Germany. At about 1.5 hours of driving from our house, we can cross the border into Germany.
だいたい昼食の時間でしょうか、我々、最初の宿泊地に到着しました。さて、下の写真たちから我らがどこに来たかわかりますか？
Around lunch time, we arrived at our first staying place. Can you guess where we were from the pictures below?
大きな駅。上からいろんな電車達を見ることができます。これにはBoy2大興奮。右の写真はこの都市の市庁舎。はい。ここは港町、ハンブルクです。それが我らの最初の宿泊地でした。
Big station. You can look down a lot of different trains. That was very nice, especially for Boy2. The picture on the right is the city hall. Yes. This is the habour city, Hamburg. Our first stay was at Hamburg.
昼食後少し時間があったので、街を散策してみました。私はハンブルクは２回目。昔住んでいたロッテルダムにちょっと似た雰囲気が結構好きです。今回はSt. Petri教会というこの市庁舎の近くの大きな教会に入ってみました。
Since we had some time in the afternoon, we walked around the city. This was the second time for me to come to Hamburg, but I really ike the atomosphere, which is slightly like Rotterdam where we used to live. This time, we visited a big church called St. Petri, close to the city hall.
内部装飾はすごくシンプル。典型的なプロテスタントの教会と言う感じでしょうか。この教会、132mの高い時計塔があってそこに登れるのです。我らももちろん登ってみましたよ。
Inside, it is quite simple: a typical protestant church. The church has a very high tower of 132m and you can actually climb up. We tried it.
これは途中の上の写真でいう時計の辺りかな。DropとBoy2の後ろに鐘が見えます。この辺りから上りの階段がどんどん狭く、しかも吹き抜けになっていきました。
This is on the way, around the clock area on the picture above. you can see the bell behind Drop and Boy2. From this point the stairs going upwards were getting narrower, and very open.
上の教会の写真でとんがり屋根にある小さな点々がわかりますか？それが実は小さな丸い窓で中から外が見えるのです。ここの塔、このトンガリ屋根の本当にとんがった一番上のところまで登れるのですよ。
On the picture of the church, you can see tiny dots on the pointy roof of the tower. Those dots are little round windows through you can see out from the inside. You can climb up all the way to the highest windows, near the tip of the roof of this tower.
最初はBoy2がそんな高いところまで登れるのかと心配していたのですが、最初にギブアップしたのはなんとDropさんでした。彼、高所恐怖症気味で、この狭く、吹きさらし（階段の間から下が見える）の古い階段はどうもダメだったよう。さらにその大きな隙間だらけの階段を小さなBoy2が登っていくのを見ているのですでに怖かったらしい（落ちる落ちると想像するみたい）。ある地点（だいたい下から２個目の丸い窓の辺）で、Boy2と一緒に待っていたかったようでしたが、Boy2は完全に拒否。Dropだけがそこに残ることに。最終的にこの２歳児、一番上までBoy1と私と共に登りきったのですよ。すごいぞBoy2！Boy1も頑張りました。
Initially I was worried if Boy2 could manage to climb up. But the person who gave up first was, interestingly enough, Drop. He has a tendency to be scared of heights. Very narrow, open (you can see through the bottom) and old stairs were not his friends. And also he was so scared to see that tiny Boy2 was walking on these open stairs. He suggested to wait for us at a certain point (around the second row of round windows) with Boy2. But Boy2 said no. He wanted to come along to the top. In the end, he could manage to climb all the way up to the tip with Boy1 and me. Great job, Boy2! (Of course for Boy1 too)
得意げなこのお二人。一番上の部屋は狭く、潜水艦の中の一室ような感じでした。そして、ここからの眺望が右の写真。高さがわかるでしょうか。ハンブルクの街が小さく見えるー！市庁舎の写真を撮りたかったのですが、階段の位置の関係で撮れなかった。残念。でもこの市庁舎も下に小さーく見えましたよ。
Triumphant picture. The last room was like a small room in a submarine or so. And the view from there. You can see how high it is.... Hamburg town looks so small. I wanted to make a picture of the city hall which was also seen very small but the position of the stairs didn't allow me...
帰路はBoy2を一人で歩かせるのは流石の私も怖ろしく、おんぶで降りました。抱っこじゃ足元が見えないですからね。
On the way back down, it was so scary to let Boy2 walk by himself. So I carried him on my back. That made it more or less possible to descent safely.
旅1日目からなかなか楽しい経験ができたかな。
It was a very nice activity on the first day of our trip.
