我が家には車が二台あります。一台は家族用、トヨタカローラハイブリッド、そしてもう一台は私の通勤用、日産リーフ、電気自動車です。約2年前に新車で購入しました。その時ちょうどモデルチェンジの頃かなんかで、ものすごい値引きをしていたのですよ。Dropはいつも新車を買うなんてアホや、と言いますが、日本人の私は中古車ではなく、新車を買いたいんですよねぇ。。
We as a family have two cars. One is for famliy use, a Toyota collora hybrid and the other one is for my commuting, a Nissan Leaf. It is a full-electric car. I bought it about two years ago. It was super discounted for a while, due to the new model introduction or something like that. Drop always says that it is stupid to buy a new car. But I am a Japanese, I have a strong preference to buy a new one, not a second-hand one.
その頃、オランダでは環境保護の観点から電気自動車の購入が推奨されていました。電気自動車は免税で購入には多額の補助も出ていました。それもあって日産リーフを新車でかなりお得に購入できたのでした。ショールームに置かれていた車だったので、360度モニターとか追突防止センサーとか、いろいろなオプションもついていてラッキー。
At that time, Dutch government was giving a lot of support to people buying an electric car because of enviromental concerns. I could buy it tax free and get a subsidy for the purchase. In the end I could get my brand new Leaf for quite a good price. It had been a show room car. Many additional options are also in place, like 360 degree monitor, corrision sensor etc.
電気自動車に乗ることにかかる費用は当時は充電、電気代のみ。我が家の屋根には少しソーラパネルも付いているし、家に充電ポールを設置してからというもの、使用感はかなりお得で快適。ガソリンスタンドに行く必要もなければ、遠出でもしない限りは充電器を探し回る必要もないのです。
The cost for driving an electric car at that time was only electricity. We have some solar panels on our roof, once we invested to have charging port at home, it was quite confortable to have it. I never needed to go to a fuel station, and I don't need to look for a charging point unless I go very far away.
でも私の快適電気自動車ライフはそう長くは続きませんでした。国の電気自動車に対する補助期間が終了したのです。購入に補助も出なければ、当然のこと、税金がかかってきました。道路税と車両税。免税後、いきなり二種類。しかもこの税金、車両の重量をベースに計算されています。知ってますか？電気自動車って充電池のせいで普通のガソリン車に比べると相当重量があるのですよ。我が家のトヨタカローラくん（ハイブリッド）、私のリーフちゃんよりもかなり軽いのですわ。結果として、リーフにかかる税金はカローラよりも高額なのです。
But my happy electric car life didn't continue so long.... Dutch goverment stopped the support. No subsidy, and they of course introduced taxes. Road tax and car tax. Two of them, after it first being tax free. And the fee is based on the weight of the car. Do you know? Electric cars are much much heavier compared to normal gasoline cars because of the battery. Our Toyota corolla is much lighter than my Nissan leaf. So as the result, tax is more expensive on my Leaf.
なんだか騙された感じがするのよねー。国が電気自動車の購入を推奨。ゼロエミッションだし、環境に優しい。でも今の状況を見てください。環境のためにより高い車に投資して（ま、すごい値引きはいただきましたけれど。。）、その車を運転することで、ガソリン車よりは環境を保護しているつもりです。でもそういう人たちがガソリン車に乗る人よりもより高い税金を納めないといけないなんて。。制限速度を遥かに上回って走る小さなガソリン車を見るたびに、なんだか不公平だなーと悔しい気持ちになるのです。
I was feeling a bit cheated at that time. The goverment strongly encouraged people to buy an electric car. It is zero emission and good for the environment. Look at the situation now. I invested to buy a more expensive car for the environment (even though I got a big discount) and I am still keeping environment (relatively) clean by driving one. But I need to pay much more tax compared to gasoline cars.... Everytime I see a small gasoline car going far beyond maximum speed on the road, I feel somehow unfairness....
でも今の世界を見てください。戦争のせいでガソリンの値段が跳ね上がりました。でも今のところ電気代はそんなに変わっていません。地球温暖化の影響で、ここオランダでさえ、暖かい晴れの日が増えてきました。ソーラーパネルをうまく利用すると、私の車の充電は夏はほとんどタダ。もちろん世界の状況は決して良い状況ではありません。わかってます。でも正直なところ電気自動車使用者としてちょっと気分がいいのは疑いようもない事実なわけで。。
But look at the current world. Because of the stupid war, the gasoline price is suddenly sky high. But the price of electricity has not changed much. Due to the global warming, there are quite some hot sunny days even here in the Netherlands. With our solar panels, my car charging is almost free in the summer. Of course it is not a nice situation for the world. I understand that. But I cannot deny that I feel a bit nicer about owning an electric car.
