新年を迎えて、私の長期休暇も終わり、ついに再出勤の日がやってきました。1月5日月曜日の朝、ここ、オランダ完全に真っ白。そう、雪です。雪は1月3日から降り始め、だんだんひどくなり、5日の朝には15cmほどの積雪になっていました。
After welcoming the new year 2026, my long holiday ended and finally the day came that I needed to go back to work. That monday morning, 5 January, the Netherlands were covered in white. Yes, snow. Snow had started falling from the 3rd of January and it became worse and worse and it had piled up around 15 cm by the morning of 5th.
その日、分析機器のエンジニアが来る予定になっていたので、普通に出勤することにしました。私の会社は公共交通機関で行くのはかなり大変なので、選択肢は車一本。私の車はフォーシーズンタイヤを履いています。効果的かどうかって？それは使ってみないことには分からんよね。
I had an appointment with an engineer for one of my lab's machines on that day, so I decided just to go to the office. My office cannot so easily be reached by public transport. The choice I have was only by car. My car is wearing four season tires. How good? I don't know. But I had no choice but to try and find out.
その朝はまだ結構雪が降っていました。15分ほどかけて車の上に山と積もった雪を取り除き、ようやくゆっくりと運転し始めました。我が家は結構高速道路に近いのです。通常高速にさえ乗ってしまえば、道路はシャベルのついた特別な車で素早く雪を取り除いてくれています。ただ、５日の朝の高速道路上はまだ真っ白でした。高速を走る車の平均速度は時速40から60km。大雪初日のせいか、皆、結構慎重です。通常20分で着くのを1時間以上かけてようやく到着です。でも安全第一です。
It was still snowing quite a lot in the morning. I took me about 15 min just removing piled-up snow from my car and then I slowly started driving. My house is quite close to the highway. Normally when you go onto the high way, the roads are quite quickly cleaned up by a special car. But it was still white on the high way in the morning of 5th. The average speed was about 40-60km/h. Everybody was very careful as it was the first day of so much snow on the road. Normally duration to the office is about 20 min. But I took more than 1 hour to get there, but safely.
初日 the first day
次の日はそんなに新たな雪が降らなかったため、会社に来るのはかなり楽でした。昼休みには晴れ間も覗いていましたよ。気温はまだ氷点下だったのですが、雪が日光で溶けていっているのが分かりますか？
The day after, not much snow fell, so it was quite easy to go to the office. The sun was shining around the lunch time. You can see the snow started melting with the sunlight, even though the temperature was still minus.
この雪日も日照で終わるんだろうなーと思っていました。でも仕事始めから3日目。状況はひどくなったのです。もっと大量な雪がオランダ全土に降りました。気象庁はcode オレンジ（警告）を出しました。この警告、黄色から始まって、オレンジ、そして最高ランクが赤です。Code 赤が出ると、外出しないことが推奨されます。でもこの日もラボでその日にしないといけない仕事が一件（ラボワーカーの悲しいサガ）。。まだ警告もオレンジだし、少なくとも明るくなるのを待ってから家を出ました。
I thought our snowy days would end with the sun. But the third working day, the situtation got worse. More snow fell thoughout the Netherlands. The weather forcast was giving code orange (warning). The warning code starts from yellow and goes up to orange and the last one is red. If you get code red, you are strongly adviced not to go out from the house. But I had one task that I really needed to do on that day (sad reality of lab worker), and it was only orange, so I at least waited until it got light and started driving.
道中はすごく静かでした。あまり車が走ってない。会社には全く問題なく到着。でも曲がり角を曲がる際、車のダッシュボードに何度も滑っている警告ランプが付いていました。雪は午前中と午後始めまで、ずーっと降り続いたので、また明るいうちに帰ろうと会社を出ました。
The road was so quiet, it was no problem at all to get to the office. But I saw the alarm light of 'slipping' light up on the car dashboard several times. The snow continued falling almost whole morning and early afternoon, so I left the office early enough that I could drive back in the light.
積もった雪は約20cm。
Accumulated snow was about 20cm.
高速道路は綺麗に除雪されていて、運転は楽々。時速100km近くも可能なほど。でも住宅地はそういうわけではありません。家に帰りつき、通常通り車を止めようとバックで家の玄関前の駐車場に入ろうとしました。でも家の前、思ったよりも大量の雪が積もっていたのですねぇ、車は少しずつ滑り始め、駐車場に入る前に止まってしまいました（段差を上る前に）。アクセルをゆっくり踏んでも全く動きません。少し前に出たりと車を動かしてみましたが、状況は酷くなる一方で、最終的に私の車、滑って道路進行方向に直角になり、完全に道路を塞いだ形で止まってしまいました。道路の隣は運河、道も太い道ではありません。少しでも前に動くと運河に落ちそうだし、これ以上はもうどうしようもない。
The highway was beautifully cleaned up by then and easy to drive (even close to 100km/h was possible). But the residential area was not. When I got home, I tried to park my car as usual, going backwards to my parking spot in front of our front door. It seemed there was a lot of snow in front of our house, the car started slipping a bit when I was moving backwards, and stopped. I couldn't move anymore. I tried to maneuver to get out from the stuation but it got worse. My car slipped and turned sideways and completely blocked the road. In front of our house is a canal and the road is not wide. It was not possible at all to maneuver the car anymore, apart from driving it into the canal.

ここは潔く諦めて、助けを呼ぶしかない。Dropと雪で学校が休みになったBoy1に電話して出てきてもらいました。私がバックでアクセルを踏むタイミングで前から2人で車を押してくれるものの、私の電気自動車、すごい重いのです、びくともしません。近くで見ていた人が手を貸してくれて、３人で押してくれます。やった！動いた！ふぅ！駐車場は諦めて、車は道路脇に停め、私の雪の旅は無事終了。今日学んだ教訓は「パニックになるな、現実を受け入れろ」ってとこでしょうか。
Let's give up and ask fo help. I called Drop and Boy 1 whose school was cancelled today due to the snow. They pushed my car from the front while I was trying to move backwards. But my electric car is so heavy. It didn't move... One guy came to help us and finally my car moved! Phew! I parked my car along the road. And my snow trip was safely over.... My takeaway is "never panic, just accept the fact...".

明後日には今度は雪嵐が予報されているとか。。なんとか仕事の都合をつけて、その日は会社に行かなくても良いようにしなきゃ。Code赤になるかもしれないしね。
A snow storm is expected on the day after tomorrow.... I need to somehow arrange my work so that I don't need to go to the office on the day, cause the warnings could turn red....
