What did Pascal do for an up-and-coming winery in Sonoma?

- He made a special menu to bring out the flavors.

What up-and-coming wine does Pascal want?

-Your organic lineup is mainly California, but do you have anything else?

ーーーーー

Pascal-san, Bonjour.
Bonjour, Risa. Oh, Maddam Willson. A pleasure to see you. Thanks for coming all the way from London.
So Emily, Mr. Bernardo helped us sell some white wines from up-start wineries in Sonoma. He made a special menu to bring out the flavors so we manage to keep two wineries in a black
In a black?
I mean profitable
OK. You helped the wineries to keep them afloat. Thank you, Mr. Bernardo.
Not at all. When we run out of Rose in 2019, WCS sent four cases to save the day. We're in this together.
Enything else you need?

We want some more natural wines. Our customers are very conscious of sustainability these days. Your organic lineup is mainly California, but do you have anything else?

Luke, so good to see you again. How's business these days?

Emilly, Risa, hello, hello. When was the last time I saw you? Two years ago almost? How time flies. The last few years have been very testing. But I can finally say there's light at the end of the tunnel. Room occupancy is around seventy percent. The highest since March 2020.

Sounds very positive. How about the restraunts in your hotel?
Much better. Considering that many restraunts in Tokyo were on the verge of banckruptcy a year ago, the feauture seems bright. And receptions and banquets?
Sadly not as good. But weddings and afterparties are coming back and selling a lot of wines. More affordable wines than expensive champagne of course. But yes.

What does Mr. Slatkin say is needed to change the situation?

-He says it's necessary to speak about the art seriously in school.

What should have been done in the case of online concerts?

-The internet shold have been used to find different ways to present music to the public.

-----

???

They say that the majority of performing institutes feel a great pressure to find enough pepole to fill venue. What do you think you should do to attract bigger audiences for classical conserts in a post pandemic era.

-This is one of the most important questions about time. But it's a question that has been building for years. I can't think of any time in my life when people didn't say What do the audiences get younger, one of the halls are always gonna be full. It's always been difficult. But it's increasingly difficult over the last say 40 to 45 years. Part of it, it's because in many countries the education system in the arts has failed. The arts have taken second, third, forth place. So the first thing we have to changes is to really speak about arts seriously in school. That's the firts thing.

The second thing, acutally it's something in the way the question was asked.

Do we have to fill the hall. Filling the hall almost implies that there's a financial end to this. You'll do better if the hall's full because you sold out the tickets. Selling tickets doesn't really do for the most part much to make the financial picture better. Sold out house maybe is 35 percent of budget for that particular event. You have the cost of circuit orchestra .. soloist, stagehands all these things. It's a lot of money. So maybe we need to rethink how we look at the world. In my case, of classical music. And COVID to me became a missed opportunity for so many organizations. Here we are. We chould not go to the concerts, live. We could watch them on the internet. But what we see just concerts. Same thing you would see if you went to the hall with several cameras instead. That was a mistake. We should have been using the internet to find different ways to present music to the public who are conversant with the technology. They should not just be recording the concerts.

Subject: Interviews about organic and natural wines.

Hi Ron,

I finished the interviews as planed. Most restaurant stook organic and natural wines. Apparently they are regular customers are health conscious and have a high awareness of the SDGs. As expected the majority of these wines are from the New World. But surprisingly they also stock wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy. We're WCS is supposed to be strong. The interview records are saved in a shared folder under interviews of natural wines. So please have a look when you have time.

I need to get Emily to chage her mindset. As she is looking forward to selling French wines to Japanese restaurants. Do you have any statistics to support ethical consumptions?

Hi Ron,
I put togerther some datas as per the attached slides. I think the data by aged group has the gretest impact on the strategy. The graph on page three clearly  shows that the younger generation has a strong interest in ethical consumptions. In a long term, I believe that today's 20s and 30 somethings are the future of WCS. Hope it helps. Please let me know you need any additional materials.

What does Daniel think is the effect of offering spirits as a luxury item only at high-end bars in cities ?

-We can elevate the WCS brand into something desiable without seeming to conservative.

According to Risa, what wines are people interested in wine care about?

- An organic wine from Croatia or Greece, somewhere exotic so to speak.

------

So, gins and whiskeys. We have to think of some branding when we get back to London.

If we keep our spirits in the laxury tier and suppy them to only the best bars in town, we can elevate the WCS brand into something desiable without seeming to conservative.
You are right. We should aim for different category of whiskey from the private brand sold in supermarkets. So where are the best bars in Tokyo?

We can ask tomorrow since we are visiting a Manhattan bar at the terant hotel.
Good. Also Risa, from a native Japanese perspective, imagine you are not yet a wine aficionado but interested, what wines will catch your attention?

According to Emily, at what age do you step up to fine French wines?
- in your 40s and 50s.
What does Risa say we should stick to as a British company?

-  Stiking to whiskey and gin would be more suited to the brand than branching out to teqila or sake.
----

The thing is how we can groom our target customer from a younger age. Say, you are a successful young professional in your 20s, drinking in some high-end bar, and you encounter some unusual gin, whiskey or tequila procuded by WCS. You then, vist our web site. While you see well presented variety of quirky everyday wines from interesting countries. You send your 30s drinking natural wines, everyday New World wines before moving up the ladder into Californian and then into more prestigious French wines in your 40s and 50s. Does that sound realistic?

Very.
I think so too. However since WCS is a British company, I think stiking to whiskey and gin would be more suited to the brand than branching out to teqila or sake.
We actually have informal relationships with gin and whiskey distilleries in Scotland.
So we could discuss possible partnerships with them.

What does Emily say they can do if they cooperate with wineris in a varieties of countries?

To sum up our discussion, the pandemic hit smaller wineries the hardest. We need to sell more to support them and get them into a good rhythm. We've also established that our appeal is a wine merchant is not resonating with those below the age of 45. So, if we can work with more up and coming wineries herphaps from different countries, we can offer variety. Adding to this, if we can create some stylish spirits or even sell sake under our private, WCS brand, we can engage younger audience.

In what sense, is a conductor like the coach of a sport team?

- There are the one who mage and make decisions for the team.

When is the most important work of the conductor done?

- During the rehearsals.

-----

In a sense, a conductor is like a CEO in a comapy. There are different types of leadership, but how do you lead an orchestra to create good music?

- Actually to me the conductor is more like the coach of a sport team. The CEO of business is the person who runs the business. OK? But usually there are departments, and there are different people who head the departments. It's why I make this difference between business ans sport. A sport team is owned usually by a corporation or indivisuals or whatever. And that's the CEO, of course, but underneath that, is the person who's managing the team. Baseball, football or whatever it is. That's the person who has to decide this is how we are going to practice, this is the kind of players are going to learn. We try to perfect our playing of the sport so that when it comes to the game, we have a real plan on what to do and how we're going to acomplish it. That's the role of the conductor. There are people above me, even if in music world there is always somebody is my boss. But I'm the boss of the orchestra. So I am the one who can say this is how we are going to play, I try to reherse so prepare as possible for the conserts. And there is a consert again like the coach of the sport team, I am kind of on the side a little bit. Yes, people see me conducting just like you see the coach running up and down, yelling at people. But there is but at the time of the game, at the time of the concert there is not much you can really do. You have to adjust to the event. So it's a little closer in that way. The most important work of the conductor is done in a rehearsal, just like an important work of the manager of the team is done at the practice sessions. We use the games to maybe inspire our players a little bit and make adjustments at the last moment if we need to.

What is your impression if today's email?

To-Do lists. Like the one Ron wrote are quite helpful for both the sender and receiver. We want to make sure everything is clear concise and organized. If I received a list like that, I would need to make sure I understood the assignment and not try to add or subtract anything. Follow up with confirmation and ask questions, wherever necessary, email shouldn’t take up much time. So having additional information in attachments or shared folders is definitely the way to go.

Why is Emily against changing the brand image?

-Because they can compromise their own advantage.

ダニエル:提案

What did Daniel suggest?

- Isn't it possible to strengthen our line up of everyday wines without ruining our prestige and history?

-----

So I still can't see how we can suddenly become young and trendy when our image is centered around the traditional wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. We've always been the go-to wine merchant for vintages from prestigious vinyards.
- Emily, we're not trying to change our entire corporate identity.
- Ron, you know as well as I do that if we dilute the brand, we can compromise our own advantage.
- Isn't it possible to strengthen our line up of everyday wines without ruining our prestige and history? If anything, it make sence that a long-standing wine merchant would support new wineries and investment and research regarding sustainable methods of wine making.

- Um.. Risa, since you're the only native Japanese in the room, I have a question. What beverages are people here in their early 30s interested in?

- I understand your concern but I'm not saying we should leave the coutry forever. We could suspend our operation, say for a year to assess our true exposer to the political risk.

I still can's see the logic behind raising the price tag. If we did that, our loyal customers would definitely look for cheaper options.

-----

Risa. You're new here. Perhaps you can see our image with less bias. How do you think the Japanese clients see WCS in terms about our marketing strategy?
