「ゴーストタウン」と揶揄されたこの街に、
いま再び変化の兆しが訪れています。

The “Other Paris” in China That Once Became a Ghost Town
In Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, there’s a place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight into Paris. Known as Tianducheng, this neighborhood boasts a 108-meter-tall replica of the Eiffel Tower, cobblestone streets, and apartment-style buildings reminiscent of the French capital. When it was first built in the 2000s, it was marketed as a dream town where the wealthy could “live in Paris” without leaving China. But with few residents and empty streets, international media soon labeled it a “ghost town.” Up close, you’ll spot colorful Chinese shop signs and air conditioner units hanging from elegant balconies—small details that instantly give away it’s not the real Paris. Still, the architecture is impressively detailed, making it a popular spot for wedding photos and music video shoots.

中国らしさを漂わせ、
パリの幻想は少しだけ揺らぎますが、
その再現度は驚くほど高く、
ウェディングフォトや
ミュージックビデオの撮影スポットとしても
人気を博しました。
The Rise and Fall of Foreign-Style New Towns
In the 2000s, China saw a boom in “foreign-style” urban developments. Shanghai opened a British-themed Thames Town, Huizhou in Guangdong built a full-scale replica of Austria’s Hallstatt, and even “Little Kyoto” appeared in Dalian—though it closed just a week after opening due to public backlash. Tianducheng also faced challenges. While around 30,000 people live there today, fountains have stopped running, gardens are overgrown, and cobblestones remain cracked. The decline was partly driven by the Chinese government’s move to curb excessive “foreign worship,” restricting the creation of towns that mimic overseas cities.
海外風ニュータウンの盛衰
2000年代の中国では、
海外の街並みを模したニュータウン建設が
一大ブームとなりました。
上海には英国風の「テムズ・タウン」、
広東州恵州市にはオーストリアの
「ハルシュタット村」が登場。
さらに日本風の「小京都」まで誕生しましたが、
批判の声を受けてわずか1週間で営業停止になるなど、
波乱も少なくありません。
天都城も例外ではなく、
現在約3万人が暮らしているものの、
噴水の停止や荒れた庭園など、
かつての華やかさは影を潜めています。
背景には、中国政府が“舶来信仰”を
抑制する政策を強めたことがあり、
海外そっくりの街づくりは
徐々に姿を消していきました。
Tianducheng’s Next Chapter
In April 2024, change began again. The replica Eiffel Tower was fenced off as redevelopment plans kicked off. By 2027, the area will feature new apartment complexes and commercial spaces, giving Tianducheng a fresh new look. Just like Japan’s Huis Ten Bosch or Shima Spain Village, these themed towns tap into the universal desire to experience the charm of a foreign city without leaving home. For now, the streets are still open to visitors, and you can soak in the atmosphere of this “other Paris.” The closest subway stop is Huangheshan Station, or you can take a taxi from Hangzhou Station. If you’re curious, now might be the perfect time to see it before the transformation is complete.
再開発で変わる天都城の未来
そんな天都城に、2024年4月から
再び動きが見え始めました。
象徴であるコピー版エッフェル塔の周囲が
フェンスで囲われ、再開発工事がスタート。
2027年完成予定で、
周辺には新たなマンションや
商業施設が建設される計画です。
日本にも長崎のハウステンボスや志摩スペイン村など、海外の街並みを再現した施設がありますが、
現地に行かずとも
異国情緒を味わえる魅力は万国共通。
現在も街歩きや写真撮影を楽しむことは可能で、
最寄り駅は地下鉄・黄鶴山駅。
杭州駅からタクシーでもアクセス可能です。
