Piano Man by Billy Joel を和訳してみました

ビリージョエルと言えば、アメリカの超有名なシンガーソングライターですね。

彼の最初の大ヒットがこの「ピアノマン」ではないでしょうか。

メロディーも最高ですが、歌詞もストーリーがあって、分かり易いので、英語の勉強にもよいと思います。

ということで、和訳してみました。

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday

The regular crowd shuffles in

There's an old man sitting next to me

Makin' love to his tonic and gin

土曜日の9時

常連客が次第に店に入ってくる

僕の隣には老人が座っていて

一人っきりでジントニックを味わっている

He says, "Son, can you play me a memory

I'm not really sure how it goes

But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete

When I wore a younger man's clothes."

彼は言う、「なあ、あんたあの懐かしい曲をひけるかな。

はっきりとは覚えていないんだが、

もの哀しくて甘いやつでね、あの頃は完璧に知っていたんだが

And the waitress is practicing politics

As the businessmen slowly get stoned

Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness

But it's better than drinkin' alone

ウェイトレスは客扱いが巧みで

段々と酔っぱらっていくビジネスマンを上手くあしらってる

そう、みんな孤独っていう名の酒を共有してるだけだ

それでも一人で飲むよりはましだからね

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday

And the manager gives me a smile

'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see

To forget about life for a while

今日は土曜にしては客の入りがいい

マネージャーも僕に笑顔だ

彼は客が僕のために集まって来ているのを知ってるから

少しの間だけでも現実を忘れるためにね

And the piano, it sounds like a carnival

And the microphone smells like a beer

And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar

And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"

マイクはビールの匂いがする
