Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali Wins Gold in 3000m Steeplechase for the Second Time in a Row
On the evening of Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Moroccan Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali won the gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This makes him the first Moroccan runner in Olympic history to achieve two Olympic gold medals in just two editions.
El Bakkali outperformed Ethiopian champion Lamecha Girma, who holds the world record in this event with a time of 7 minutes 52 seconds 11 set in Paris on June 9 last year.
With this victory, the native of Fez retains his Olympic title, which he first won at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, becoming the first non-Kenyan to win the Olympic title in the 3000m steeplechase since 1980.
At 28 years old, El Bakkali smartly won a competitive race with his season-best time of 8:06.05 minutes, beating American Kenneth Rooks (8:06.41) and Kenyan Abraham Kibiwot (8:06.47).
This achievement makes El Bakkali the third Arab athlete to win twice at the Olympics, following his compatriot Hicham El Guerrouj (1500m and 5000m in Athens 2004) and Tunisian swimmer Oussama Mellouli (1500m freestyle in Beijing 2008 and 10km open water in London 2012).
