ノーベル物理学賞も受賞したイタリア系イギリス人のマルコー二という人物が
マルコーニという真空管と通信機器メーカーを興し、後に有名な英オスラム社と
合同出資して作ったのがGECという会社である。中期のGEC KT-88の青と黄色の箱には
" The M-O Valve "と書かれているが、マルコー二とオスラムの真空管という意味である。
明るく太さがあり豊潤な響きを持つ音。音にほどよい温もりがある。
スケール感があり重厚でありながら非常にシャープで軽快さもある。
流麗な美しい音楽が流れてきて、凄艶な美しさに完全に虜になってしまう。
まるでスピーカーから音が飛び出してくるような感じがします。
品格がとてもあり、気品に溢れる英国の音。演奏者の情感がダイレクトに伝わってくる。
GEC KT-88は王者の風格があります。最高のKT-88/6550出力管で間違いありません。
音には渋さがあり、枯れた落ち着いた趣きや雰囲気があり陰影感も豊かです。
GECは古典的な真空管の豊潤な音でビーム管らしく音は濁っていて
直熱三極管のような澄み切った透明な音ではありません。
また、GECはブラックプレートなので偽物の心配がありません。
GEC KT-88はまた長寿命も別格で、1日1時間 週5回鳴らして10年～15年以上使用できます。
高価ですが、寿命が長いので最初に良い球を掴めばむしろコスト的にはお得だと言えるでしょう。
GEC KT88が付属していたMC275を数えきれないほど直したというオーディオの技術者の方も、
修理したアンプなどに刺さっていたGEC KT-88が壊れているのを見た事がない、
というほど高い信頼性を誇っています。
ただし、エミ減があるので音質は劣化していき、質感は粗く低下していくので、
無限に使えるわけではありませんが、例えば出力管の故障がアンプの故障に直結する
ようなアンプ。Mcintosh MC275や復刻 MC275 UNISON RESEARCH Sinfonia や
audio research の1970年代から1980年代のアンプなどは動作中に球が壊れると
8～9割の高確率でカソード抵抗を1～2個焼いて故障するので、
まず絶対に故障しないGEC KT-88は重宝します。
このグループはGold Monarch KT-88 > GEC KT-88前期・中期・後期 >
1970年代後半から GOLD LION KT-88 > GOLD LION KT-88 の80年代の復刻版とありますが、
一般的に云われるのは古いほど音質は良いとされています。
構造など中身は同じですが後期GOLD LIONはプレートが黒色のカーボンから
灰色プレートに変更になっていて、耐久性もなくすぐに壊れるようになった。
GEC KT-88のガイドピンは球をグラグラ揺すって抜こうとすると非常に折れやすいので、
あまり揺すったりせずにスッと真っすぐ上に引き抜くとよい。もし折れてしまった場合は
アロンアルファで接着して補修するとよい。人気のある真空管だったので
日本では1980年代初頭の頃に市場によく出回っていた。価格は八木音響で
ペアチューブ2本で9,000円でした。ロシア製の復刻のGOLD LION KT-88も
ありますが、音質的にはとても優れた現代管ですが、こちらは構造及び
音質ともにオリジナルのGECやGOLD LIONとは全く関連性がありません。
ちなみにGECのシールが全部無くなるなんてことはありえないので、
シールがないものはすべてGEC KT-88を偽った中身はGOLD LIONです。
こう書いているとそのうちシールを偽造する人が出てきそうですが。
中国のバイヤーの方が言っていましたが、音質はGEC KT-88が10なら
GOLD LIONは8くらいであるらしい。拙宅ではこの両方を所有して鳴らして
いましたが、直接鳴らし比べた訳ではなくアンプも違いますし、
使っていた時期も5年以上前なので音質比較は難しいです。
この写真は所有していたGOLD LIONで80年代の復刻版です。
General Electric 6550 アメリカ合衆国
アメリカンサウンドで温度感が高く躍動的でライヴ演奏の臨場感が凄く出てきます。
熱い情熱的サウンド。濃厚で音の濃さでは出力管の中でもトップクラスで
色付けが強くて濃い音質です。暖かく艶やかな音は好ましいのですが、
音が濁りすぎるのでハイレゾ音源や現代録音のシンセサイザーで作られた
打ち込みの電子音源には不向きでマッチしないと思いました。
昔のヴィンテージ管なので米ゼネラル・エレクトリック社ではおそらく
エージング処理を行っていません。GE 6550はNOSから使い始めて1～2年で
故障する初期不良率は10％強はあるそうです。寿命はGECには及ばないですが、
それでも現代管の3～5倍という長寿命があります。弱点は音の骨格が若干弱く、
とくに低域が弱いところです。現代的なロックを聴いていると
もっと鮮明になって欲しいのに、音の濁りや低音の弱さはかなり致命的だと
感じました。上記のような音質の印象は、仏 Jadis JA-80でNOS状態で
開いていない 桂光 KT-88から差し替えたときに強く感じられました。
しばらく桂光で聴いていて、耳がその音に馴染み、リセットされたのでしょう。
したがってGE 6550の特徴が初めて聴いた時のように
新鮮によく聴きとれたのです。またJA-80はバイアスがかなり深く
かかっていて、球が焦げるような臭いを発するほど
非常に熱くなる自動バイアスのアンプだったのでGE 6550の能力が
如何なく発揮されたのだと思います。つまりバイアスを
しっかり深くかける事でこのインプレッションのような
音質的な魅力を引き出すことができると思います。
ちなみに中国製の桂光KT-88はニュートラルでクセのない音です。
SOVTEK 6550 WE ロシア連邦
ロシア製の現行管、クリアーでハイファイな音質。物理特性(低音など)は
特に優秀です。古典管と較べると無機質で味気ないと感じられるところがあるが、
音の骨格もしっかりしていて余計な色付けやクセがなくニュートラルな音質で
輪郭も切れ味がシャープで好印象です。ハイレゾ音源やサブスク音楽配信など
現代音源を楽しむシーンではこの球がもっとも適していると強く感じました。
ロシアの真空管はギターアンプ市場向け、中国の真空管は家庭用の
オーディオアンプ市場向けが主要なマーケティング対象とされていますが、
現代オーディオ向けに正常進化したあるべき姿だと思いました。
ロシアやスロバキアJJ ELECTRIC KT-88など現行管はどれも似通った音で
正直なところ大きな違いがなく、音質の違いは微妙なものかも知れないですが、
各社音作りでは同じ方向性を向いており現代オーディオが均一化している証でしょう。
これは素子自体の裸特性が良くなってきたために余計な化粧を施さずに
素性のよさを生かす方向になってきたからです。
このSOVTEC 6550WE出力管はアメリカの大手管球アンプメーカーでテストした
現行製造管のKT-88/6550の中ではもっとも長寿命でトラブルが少なく、
品質が高い真空管だという助言を頂きました。
個人のレベルではそこまで多くのメーカーをテストできません。
有益な情報を教えて下さったアメリカのメーカーの担当者には感謝を申し上げます。
現行管のKT-88と6550の比較では、6550の方が寿命が長くロングライフです。
この出力管はマイクロフォニックノイズ対策が不十分でパワーアンプの
パンチングメタルのボンネットに直に乗せたUSBファンを動作させると
スピーカーから拾った振動ノイズが出る事があり対策が必要になりました。
GECやGEではマイクロフォニックノイズが出た事は全くありません。
後は日本の真空管ショップやアンプメーカーに質問すると音質的に推奨している
現行出力管はJJ KT-88を推す声が多かったです。
たとえば、現在LUXMANでは製品出荷時にJJ KT-88を搭載しています。
拙宅ではメイン機をaudio research D-70パワーアンプにしており、
出力管はSOVTEK 6550 WEで、壊れたら大規模な故障を引き起こし最悪電源トランス
破壊に繋がる重要なレギュレーター管は信頼性が高いGEC KT-88にしています。
微粒子状のソノリティで非常にきめ細やかだが、華やかさや活気ある表現力。
ダルマ管のKT-88ほど低域の図太さを主張しないが確かな制動力がある。
構造はSOVTEC 6550WEをダブルプレートにして補強プレートを追加している。
これにより真空管の機械的強度を高めて振動や熱による変形を抑える役割を持つ。
同じロシア製のSOVTEC 6550WEとそっくりな出力管であるが、
補強プレートの他の相違点はカソード、グリッド、電極などプレートから下の構造が大きく異なる
逆に言うと、それ以外は同じ真空管と言って良いほど内部観は酷似している。

この真空管も現代的な傾向でクリアーでハイファイな音質です。
再生音から感じ取れるのは、他の一般的な現行管とは一寸違いがあり、
甘美な艶やかさや色気が感じられるところです。ノーマルのロシア管から
音質的には一段と練れていてクオリティが高い。こちらは昔MC275を
使っていた時に試した古い記憶をもとにインプレッションを書いています。
この球は他よりも高価な価格帯のプレミアム・チューブなので、
先に述べた米国管球アンプメーカーではメーカー出荷時に標準搭載する
出力管として耐久テストには加えていないだろうと推察されます。
ロシア管は現在マッチドクアッド・4本で最低でも34,000円～くらいします。
ロシアの真空管はウクライナの戦争や人件費高騰などの影響もあり、
日本には入ってきてはいるものの、色々な国を経由して入っており
かなり値段が上がっている。真空管の価格に付いては上がるか現状維持かで、
下がる見込みはないそうだ。AliExpress から直販で買えるPSVANE KT-88は
マッチドクアッド・4本で送料込みで現在16,000円強と、価格の安さでは
他社を圧倒しています。日本のアンプメーカーの技術者に真空管が好きな
人がいて、ご意見を伺ったところ PSVANE KT-88は音質・品質ともに
良くできているらしいですね。中国は現在は急速に発展して現在では
先進国に肩を並べていますが、中国から日本に発送される商品は
発展途上国枠で国際送料は非常に安価な設定のまま据え置かれています。
重要な注意点としましては、こうした真空管はNOS（新品）で買ってきて
最初の聴き始めは硬質な音で、パッとしない印象で良い音がしないということです。
最低でも25時間、できれば100時間以上アンプで音楽を聴いていると
徐々に真空管が "開いて" きます。開花した真空管の音で球の音質を判断します。
そのことを知らなくて買って音を聴いて落胆してすぐに手放してしまう人も
昔から沢山おられます。自分も経験があります。ロシアの出力管などは
プリントされた黒い印字部分が長時間、何年か使っていると薄れていきますので、
鮮明な黒い印字が残っていればその球はあまり使っていないと思われますので
中古で寿命が短い現行出力管を買う際には参考になるかと思います。
今回ご紹介した中では現行出力管は原材料費ではどれも大きな差はなく、
真空管の選別や長時間のエージング(72時間など)によって価格が変わってきます
昔の高信頼管は驚くほど長時間のエージングを掛けていました。
海底ケーブル用のWE455などではエージングを10年間も行うのです
10年で厳しい選別から外れたものは「Not for cable」ということで
民間に流されますが、パスしたものは20年間使えるのです。
そこまででなくても高信頼管の場合は1日なり1週間なり
通電させているとカソードが安定して変化やバラ付きが少なくなる。
安価な球ではそこまでのことはできませんので、
余裕のある使い方であれば、使い込んでいく事でエージングと
