SP-3の音はやや平面的で、音楽を大づかみに捉えてズバッと描くというところがあり、
聴きこんでいくとやや音の粒立ちが粗いといったところも感じられるが、
こうしたラフなタッチも割合思い切りのよさとして感じられ、組み合わせるべき
スピーカーを十分吟味すると、ネガティブな印象にはならない。
SP-3は歴代ARCプリアンプで最も個性と色付けの強いプリアンプであることは
明らかであり、管球らしさを満喫されてくれる柔らかい音であり、この年式としては
十分な解像力を持ち、ソフトフォーカスではあるが、肝心の音の輪郭は
しっかりと太い線で描かれ、小音量に限った話ではあるが、耳辺りがよくて
刺激的な音を出さないという感じで、管球アンプが好きな方には
こうした音を好まれる方はかなり多いので、多くの人に歓迎される音がする。
音質傾向としては後年のSP-6やSP-8とほぼ同じ音だが、SP-3は年式が10年古くなるので、
解像度では落ちるのだが、比較すると音の勢いがあり、張り倒されそうな音の強さを感じる。
音量をかなり上げていくと、先ほどの話と矛盾めいて聞こえるかもしれないが、
ALTECのホーン型をニアで聴いたりなどすると、高域がSP-8よりキツくなるようだ。
図太いアメリカンサウンドの粗削り音の魅力といえる。長所としてはアンプの
パワーをどんどんあげていって大きな音を出しても破綻せず、よくあるのがアンプの
電流の供給力不足による音像崩壊の状態に陥って、やかましい音、歪っぽい感じにならず、
気持ちの良い音で聴けるように設計・デザインされている。
まさに大音量で鳴らすアメリカ人向けのアンプだと言える。SP-8は特性的に
正常進化しており、音の実体感、リアリティが向上し、より洗練されているので、
音を聴いて好きなモデルを選べばいいだろう。ただ猛烈なパワー感とARCサウンドの
強烈な魅力という点では、SP-3がベストだろう。組み合わせるパワーアンプは
当然 audio researchがベストで、つぎにALTEC、そしてスピーカーは
ALTECやJBLとの相性が抜群に良かった。やはりALTECやJBLのスピーカーが、
TANNOYや Electro-Voice よりも、このアンプにふさわしく溢れ出るような
エネルギーをがっちりと受け止めてくれるところがあります。
ボリュームのゲインは高くなく使いやすい。またイコライザー類は
このアンプの場合は音質が悪くなるので使わない方が良いだろう。
