先週金曜日に
徳島から大阪経由して
横浜に戻ってきました。

Last Friday、
I came back to Yokohama via Osaka.
It was a logn trip as uaual.
今日は素敵な日本の手仕事について
それは、
背守り。
背守りって、聞いたことありますか？
Today
I want to write about
Semamori.
Have you ever heard of it?
わたし、
つい最近まで、 知らなかった。
Me,?
I din't know that until recently.
藍染めの絞りをきっかけに
手縫いに興味を持つようになり、
背守りも その一つだったのです。
Learning shibori stitch technique gave me a chance
to know more about hand sewing, and
semamori was one of them.
背守りは、
言葉どおり、
背中のお守り。
Se means the back,
and mamori mieans amulet.
昔の人は「縫い目」には、
災いを防ぐ力があると信じていました。
子供の着物
には、
サイズが小さいため、
背中に縫い目がありません。
だから、
お母さんが、
子供を守るために
背の部分に縫い目をつけたのがはじまり。
The Japanese used to believe
the seams protected one from evil.
Since children's kimono have no seams,
because of the size,
the embroidery was made to create seams
to protect them.
背守りの基本は、
背筋に沿って9針、
男の子は、斜め左に3針
女の子は、斜め右に3針
が、基本です。
Traditional semamori has nine vertical stitches
along the line of the back bone,
then, for boys three stithes are angled to the left down,
and for girls to the right.
色々な絵柄があります。
