UKC Japan is an affiliate of the United Kennel Club, the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world. Our mission is to abolish euthanasia of animals and to create a society where animals are treated fairly and humanely. Since our foundation three years ago, we have been striving to become a major animal shelter in Japan.
On March 11, 2011, when the Tohoku area was devastated by the tragic tsunami, we left our headquarters in Kyoto, and built a shelter in Kanagawa prefecture. Since then, we have rescued over 800 pets from the tsunami-stricken areas of Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures in the Tohoku area.
Currently, with help from volunteers, we are taking care of over 350 pets which have been left behind in the 20KM radius zone in Fukushima. Radiation, a non visible threat, prevents these pets from going back home. Pet owners are unable to return to their homes and are in temporary housing where pets are not allowed.
Out of the 800 pets we have rescued, many have gone to temporary host families; however, the remaining 350 dogs and cats in our shelter are aging, sick, or untamed, making them difficult to be adopted. With an unknown future for these pets, we continue to do our best to create a comfortable temporary home for them. Thanks to the support from people all over the world, we are encouraged to continue our efforts.
These Fukushima pets need support from everyone. They have a warm home and their stomachs are full in our shelter. However, there are still many pets abandoned in the 20KM radius zone in Fukushima, and we are determined to rescue them. Despite this, we are running out of space and need to create another shelter soon in order to save these animals. Please help us save these innocent lives.
